I am the director of a new museum in the Imperial Valley. Before coming to California, I was teaching history at the university level and working as a public historian. I believe that if you do not like history, then you are being taught it incorrectly. History is an exciting subject that is about people and their stories. History is also a lot about the present. I can make these connections for you so that history becomes interesting and manageable. I am also widely published and can assist with writing or public speaking. I am sorry that so many teachers make history hard and boring. I won't.
I completed my Doctorate at The Ohio State University. My dissertation, published as Volume 7 of the Greenwood Press, Homes Through American History series, was about domestic housing from the 1920s through World War II. As an adjunct professor, I taught World History at Otterbein College. I teach this by focusing on the great monuments and artwork that most people have seen. This allows the students to connect what they are learning to what they already know. At Capital University I taught American History. Here, I try and place everyday history in the context of major historical events. In this way, students can discuss larger historical issues through topics that they find more interesting.
I have worked professionally as a public historian with an expertise in museum quality restoration. While with the Ohio Historical Society, I led the restoration efforts on five presidential homes. I have always approached history from the side of the general public, and I think this makes a difference in my teaching style. History is more than dates and places, and understanding what the "more" is will allow you to remember the dates. I am the director of a new museum in the Imperial Valley. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
