I am a 38-year-old male with a BS in Electrical Engineering and a MEd in Math Education - Curriculum and Instruction. I used to teach high school math from 2008 - 2016, and also used to coach XC / track for 6 years. I feel very confident in my ability to help students as a math tutor because my experience as a high school teacher has taught me how to differentiate my teaching style to accommodate to different learning styles.

As a high school teacher, I taught the following classes over the years: Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus / Trigonometry, AP Calculus, and AP Statistics. In addition to those subjects, I tutor SAT Math, ACT Math, and GRE Math. I also used to teach at a special education school for 3 years, so have significant experience working with students with learning disabilities.

As a standardized test tutor, I believe that students learn to master the content through assessment, instruction, and repetition. My students that have seen the most improvement take a new practice test between each tutoring session, and then each tutoring session is spent going over any problems that the student gets incorrect. In general, they make less mistakes as they take more tests. Of course, the lesson can be structured in other ways if your preference differs.

Credentials:
-Perfect 800 Math SAT score.
-Perfect 800 Math GRE score (old scoring scale was 200 to 800). I would be happy to verify my SAT and GRE scores. Just ask, and I can email a copy of my scores.
-I didn't take the ACT in high school, but I did recently take an ACT practice test, and received a perfect score on the Math section.
-8 years experience teaching all levels of high school math.
-As a high school AP Calculus teacher, the percentage of my students that scored a 5 on the AP test was 21% higher than the national average, and the percentage of my students that passed the AP test (with a score of 3 or better) was 24% higher than the national average.

AP Calculus

Great teacher! It took him and my son only a couple of hours to catch missing work for a month of school. Strongly recommend him for everyone who needs help in this subject!

Amazing turn around in Calculus

My son had a 64% in AP Calculus after his mid-term, and working with Dan weekly through the rest of the semester, he pulled his overall grade up to 77%. I am amazed and very very grateful!

Prepared and Knowledgeable

Dan was prepared with suggestions on how to teach and solve the high school calculus topics I needed to learn. He led me to finding the correct solutions. He was very easy to understand and to ask questions. Great job with calculus tutoring!

Makes sure you understand

Dan has been working with my high school son with his precalculus work and made a huge difference in boosting my son's confidence. He explained how to do the problems and made sure Trevor understood how to do on his own. By the 2nd session, my son pleasantly realized he was actually "getting" the material. Thank you!

Precalc

Dan O. was very informative and was very good at explaining things so I could understand. He was very good at working at a pace that I could keep up with and helping me with the problems without giving me the answers right away. He was also very good at reminding me about things I had forgotten from previous math classes.

Maddy, 1 lesson with Dan

Great lesson

I liked how when doing problems, Dan goes step by step and asks the student questions along the side so they are actively learning. He is also very flexible with time.
