About Julianna

I am currently an English tutor working at the Grossmont-Cuyamaca school district and an undergraduate student in sociology at UCSD. I love working one-and-one with students to help them improve their writing. Something important to note about my tutoring philosophy: I do not make better papers; I make better writers.

I do not take the position of your teacher or your editor, but instead hope to work alongside you to help you reach your goals.

Tutoring is a cooperative experience. At the beginning of our session, expect to first have a conversation about your thoughts and opinions about your assignment. It is always good to get a general scope about your understanding of the assignment. Next, you will set the agenda. In our tutoring sessions, you will always be in the driver's seat. So would you like to work on grammar? Structure? Developing a thesis? Simply brainstorming? You decide. Of course, if you are completely unsure where to start (as some students tend to be), don't worry! I will help you know where to begin.

During our session, expects questions. I would like to help YOU uncover your own understanding. Writing is a process, and like the painter must do with the painting, we must take a step back every now and then to see the big picture. At the end of our session, I will always ask you what your learned. This way, we can both solidify the progress you are making in our minds, and heck, I might learn a thing or two from you too.

Remember, writing is never easy. Oftentimes, we see the finished product of a writer's work and think, "It must come naturally to them!" Yet, what we don't see is the process that got that person there. I understand the struggle of writing, and how it can sometimes be a I-wanna-bang-my-head-on-the-wall type of process. However, you don't have to go through it alone, and sometimes a simple out loud conversation gives you the motivation and excitement you need to get a project going. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. I look forward to talking with you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
