About Emily

My greatest passion in life is learning and my second-greatest passion is sharing that love for learning with my students. I am a senior at SDSU, soon to receive my Bachelors degree in Liberal Studies (aka: Elementary Education) with an emphasis in Mathematics. Within the next 2 years, I will be a fully certified California public school teacher, qualified to teach all subjects from Kindergarten - 6th grade, as well as math as high as 8th grade. I have had great success tutoring privately at the elementary, middle school, and college levels. I am patient, kind, creative, and have a talent for explaining concepts and ideas in new ways in order to help a student understand new or difficult material.

My first priority in my career, both as a tutor and a teacher, is to make school content less intimidating for my students. School should be challenging, but not stressful; and most importantly, it should be fun!

When teaching, I always choose to take the conceptual approach rather than the procedural one. This means that rather than simply teaching a student HOW to get the right answer to a question, I teach them why that method works and why it gets them to the right answer. It has always been my belief that this method and this style of teaching helps my students to better understand the material they are learning, and it also helps them to better retain the information so that they are more likely to be able to remember it the next day (and especially on exams!) This is due to the fact that they aren't being asked to blindly memorize complex procedures and algorithms; they have a deeper understanding of the material so that even if they forget the procedure or algorithm, they are often able to retrace their knowledge and recreate the procedure on their own. In my experience, this method of teaching is far more effective, especially in math.

Not every student is going to fall in love with school and learning the way I have, but the material they are learning in school should never be so intimidating that they feel the desire to give up. What I have learned is that it is very rarely the case that the material is simply too difficult for the student; the issue most often lies in that the material is not being presented in a way that makes sense or is interesting to your student. Every child is different, and every child's mind works in a unique way. So I make it my job to figure out the best way to teach each individual student. Using these methods, I have never had a student not make drastic improvement under my tutelage.

Math is something that a lot of students find exceptionally challenging, but I make it my job to make math something that they can understand so that it becomes less difficult (and as a result, less scary.)

The English language can be a tricky one! But I have always excelled in language, and it is something that comes very naturally to me. I am very good at coming up with tips and tricks to help students navigate their way through this often challenging area of study.

I am studying to be an elementary level teacher. I have spent over 100 hours in classrooms in the United States, working in all subjects. I have also spent about 30 hours in similar classrooms in Granada, Spain. I love this age group, and am dedicating my career to these students.

I have spent over 150 total hours total working in Elementary and Middle School classrooms in the US. I have worked with students of all ages, of all levels of achievement, and in all subjects.
I also have experience with one-on-one tutoring. Many students I have worked with had other tutors in the past, and all have said that they prefer my manner and my teaching style to that of their previous tutors. I am kind and patient, as well as knowledgeable; and I believe both are required to be an excellent tutor.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am studying to be an elementary school teacher and I have completed three years of study toward my Bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies. I have spent over 120 hours in Elementary school classrooms, working hands on with students in all subject areas. I have also tutored privately at this level with great success.

Geometry

I have taken several geometry courses, including some at the college level. Geometry is a subject that comes very naturally to me, and I have also had a lot of success in tutoring in this area.
