Purdue University (General Agriculture)
Hi, my name is Bonnie (short for Bonita). While I am now in the San Diego area, I had lived in Lake County, IL most of my life, and graduated from Deerfield High School as a member of the National Honor Society and an Illinois State Scholar. I was active in choir every year, and my main extracurricular activities were the Drama Club and (dramatic) Forensics team.
I have a B.S. from Purdue University in General Agriculture, which was mostly spent studying Landscape Architecture. While at Purdue, I was elected president of the Purdue Society of Landscape Architects, served in Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity, and was a member of Pi Alpha Xi Agricultural Honor Society.
After working for five years as Payroll and Personnel Manager at a Chemical Company in Northbrook, I went back to school to study art. I earned an Associates Degree in Illustration from the American Academy of Art in Chicago.
Since that time, I had been raising my children, and homeschooled them through high school. One is finished with college and the other is about to finish. I did some temp assignments with Manpower during those years, and a lot of volunteer work. This included leading the Junior Choir at our church for several years, teaching art at our homeschool group, and making many costumes for my childrens' plays with CYT - Christian Youth Theater. I also worked on sets committee when they did Les Miserables and had a lot of fun painting the barricade.
I also had been self-employed as a real estate broker in Illinois and launched my own firm from 2003 to 2011. Hi, my name is Bonnie (short for Bonita). In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
For over 30 years I have been reading the Bible regularly and attending Bible studies. My husband has a Master of Divinity from Trinity International University in Deerfield, and we have a wonderful library that I also enjoy on Biblical subjects. I would enjoy helping a student with their Bible study.
I have over 17 years' experience as a real estate broker in Illinois, taking many exams in that time, from the salesperson license exam to the broker exam and continuing education exams every two years. I passed every real estate exam I ever took on the first attempt.
I have passed the required courses for the California Real Estate License, and have been approved to take the exam.
Having completed an Associates of Arts in Illustration at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, I enjoy teaching individuals to draw. I find this skill useful in many subjects, including science, in order to describe what you see through the microscope or in nature. I have done portrait work for many years, and can move on into painting when the student is ready.
I have a Bachelor of Science Degree from Purdue University.
I have also just completed three months of tutoring grade school children in English Language Arts in the Cajon Valley School District, through the One-on-One Learning With Laptops program. My students all improved their scores from the pretest to the posttest.
I also home-educated my children, and am familiar with the scope and sequence requirements at each grade level. I also found many wonderful creative ways to help them master subjects along the way, and would love to help today's students to have the same success.
I was an Illinois State Scholar, member of The National Honor Society, and was included in Who's Who Among American High School Students. This was at one of the top rated high schools in the country, Deerfield High School in Deerfield, IL.
While I do not have a professional teaching credential, I feel well able to handle and explain every subject covered in the K-6 levels.
I taught art to grades K-6 at a private school in Zion, IL for one school year, and have taught art at a homeschool enrichment group, and have had private art students over the years.
Having home educated my two children, I taught them both to read using phonics, which I believe is the best way to teach someone to read whether they have ever seen a word before or not. I used a wonderful SRA program to help them get a solid foundation in phonics.
I have been sewing for over 40 years and have helped costume numerous shows in community theater. I have learned many things that can be timesavers and look forward to teaching this enjoyable skill.
I have been singing in choirs and doing solos for over 40 years, and have had wonderful voice instructors. I have also taught voice in CYT community theater classes in Lake County, IL. I enjoy helping people to develop good technique so that they can sing freely and without tiring.
