About Marcela

To me, learning is really about adapting effective learning strategies. These strategies must be based on each student's individual style. Then, learning issues can be clarified, evaluated, and resolved. This allows learning to be a fascinating, mind blowing, and interesting experience. Intellectual growth, in essence, is based on:
1) clarity
2) creative simplicity
3) logical steps and leaps.

My subjects of proficiency are English, writing, algebra I, geometry, geology, basic math, Spanish, and German.

I started tutoring 6th graders in high school at the local Hispanic Community Center in elementary math and reading. Then, during undergraduate college, I continued as a Supplemental Instruction Leader for college Biology for 2 years. From this experience I learned to adapt my instruction methods to best suit the learning style of the students.

After completing an undergraduate Bachelor's of Science degree with major in Anthropology, and chemistry minors (3.84 GPA), I continued teaching during my graduate school years. I assisted in problem based learning sessions for high school students and also tutored freelance conversational Spanish. Later, after finishing my graduate coursework in 2009, I began tutoring high school students and high school graduates in algebra, English, biology, and SAT prep. I currently private tutor for a few students in the San Gabriel valley area.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have many years of experience teaching and tutoring college level American History. My students have all attained A's in their course. In addition, I have also tutored college level writing with success.

Anthropology

I am a qualified in the subject of Anthropology because I have a bachelors in the subject from UC Riverside. I have also worked as a TA in UCR for lower division classes in anthropology and archaeology. In addition, I have done three field schools using the methods of anthropology.

Archaeology

I am a qualified in the subject of archaeology because I have a bachelors in the overall discipline of Anthropology from UC Riverside. I have also worked as a TA in UCR for lower division classes in anthropology and archaeology. In addition, I have done three field schools using the methods of anthropology and archaeology.

Bar Exam

I have 2+ years of experience tutoring for the California Bar Exam on a private basis. This tutoring includes essay writing in subject tests in: Contracts, Evidence, Corporations, Civil Procedure, Property law, Wills & Trust; MBE (multistate multiple choice test) practice, and Performance Test essay writing. My method of tutoring for the bar exam is to get the student to focus on the organization of their writing, to learn test taking strategies , and to write on the level the California Bar Examiners want and are looking for in a student. My background: I am a licensed attorney (CA Bar no. 283092) since 2012, and I received my Juris Doctorate in 2012 from Southwestern Law School.

Drawing

I have taken several art classes, that have prepared me to teach art to students. I have also won awards for my artwork for it's realism, and perspective. I have tutor as a volunteer children with disabilities to draw and paint, which made me realize how wonderful it is to teach something you love.

Public Speaking

I’m an independent instructor, consultant on business law and communication, as well as motivational and inspirational public speaker. My experience spans more than 2 years of exposure in public events: such as workshops and lectures. Member of CAALA and NSA (National Speaker Association).

Sociology

I have a Bachelor of Science degree with major in Anthropology, and chemistry minors (3.84 GPA). I finished successfully with a 3.8 GPA several undergraduate courses in Sociology while in UC Riverside: Introduction to Sociology, Evolutionary Sociology, Linguistic Diversity, and Global Change in society.

Spanish

I have taught Spanish privately for more than 7 years. I have taught students of different ages: from 1st grade to college level.

I particularly enjoy teaching students a new language because it opens them to so many new opportunities. My goal when teaching Spanish is to make it fun, practical, and motivate my students to discover a new culture. I believe the key to learning a language is to understand the culture and history behind that language. In addition, this should be supported by writing, speaking, and listening to the language.

Writing

I have tutored writing for over 7 years to High School and College level students with great success. All of my students, no matter their level, have improved their abilities, and their desire to write. I find most of the students I help have difficulty putting their thoughts down on paper, but through a process of asking and answering questions regarding their topic they can get a better grasp of what and how they want to write.
