After training at UCLA, I taught English in Taiwan for two years and studied Mandarin Chinese at the same time. Since I speak Mandarin, I understand the special challenges that English presents to Chinese learners.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

There are several techniques that I have found to be effective, but I rely most heavily on the drawing techniques of the book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain". In addition I use gesture and contour drawing as well.

I often use art and craft activities to deepen understanding of math and English. Children enjoy cooking and gardening and storybook making (I am a yearbook advisor).
In the book I co-authored, we identify 12 essential components of solid mathematical understanding in children. Problem solving, communication, reasoning, application...etc. all can be applied to simple, everyday situations to be presented to a young student.
Hands on activities related to cooking, gardening, handicrafts, and simple construction are appealing to young children and strengthen the concepts they are learning in the classroom.
I was junior high school yearbook advisor for 13 years, so my teaching of English and writing comes from this point of view. Yearbooks are really storybooks and picturebooks. A student and I find stories they want to tell or retell through pictures and words.
People enjoy talking about subjects which interest them and for which they have useful vocabulary. For this reason, I guide students to focus their language learning on a few specific topics which are interesting or important (career wise) to them. Then we develop vocabularies of words and phrases critical to these topics and students memorize these. I encourage students to generate sentences they expect to use frequently, then I tape record and they memorize these as well.
We always start with oral language, conversation, and critical pronunciation. Then we study the written forms and the disparities between the two.
The desire to communicate and be understood is the key.
