About Barbara

I have retired from teaching after twenty eight years teaching mostly middle school but I have also taught high school summer school classes. I have taught a variety of subjects at all grade levels from seventh through eleventh grade, mostly English proficiency and required social studies classes at a local high school during the summer. I enjoy working with students and watching them grow and learn. I usually find I learn something right along with them.

I will try to help the student learn how they learn best and work with them to complete their assigned work. Ultimately the goal will be to improve or maintain high grades in classes they are enrolled in as well as improving test scores. In the past I always tried to get students to see and understand how things that happened in the past have relevance in our lives today. In literature or history, they can make associations that will enhance their learning and retention of important materials. They will find that learning can be fun.

My credential includes English as a subject that I can teach. I have taught Language Arts classes. I have been trained in all the state adopted ESL/ESOL programs since 1982. As a result, I often taught history to students with limited English. I have also taught adult ESL classes.

My BA is in history and my credential program emphasize teaching history in the classroom.

After receiving my degree and credential, I moved to the desert where I had taught for twenty-eight years before retiring. Teaching one on one or to a small group is much more effective than in large numbers so I am sure we can work together to enhance your learning. Since I am retired, I am available almost anytime that would suit the student or his/her family. It also means that I am not dividing my attention between the student I am tutoring with time I have to spend preparing for teaching classes in the daytime.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
