About Jennifer

I received my master's degree in biology with an emphasis in ecology so that I could follow a career in marine biology. I have been working in that field for 20 years and I am now interested in a change of lifestyle. It is impossible to work in science without getting a strong grasp of computers and a variety of software programs working on many different computer platforms. During my undergraduate and graduate work I taught various classes at the university level. In my current job, I have been involved with outreach programs to introduce second graders to the animals that live in wetlands.

Along the way I have always had a passion for photography and have been developing my skills and knowledge in that field as well. I took my first photography class in high school and have continued to pursue it. I also have recently started my own photography business to sell my images.

My more personal interests include SCUBA diving, as well as being a licensed commercial hot air balloon pilot.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Astronomy

I first took astronomy and advance astronomy classes in high school as well as TA'ed at the planetarium. I also took a college level course while studying for my BS in Biology. I keep up to date by being a member of the Planetary Society which sends out bi-monthly newsletters on recent discoveries and investigations.

Biology

I have a Bachelor's degree in biology with a marine emphasis and a Master's degree in ecology. I taught biology and marine biology labs while working on my degrees and 2 different universities. I worked as a field researcher for over 20 years on different projects involving invertebrate fisheries and environmental restoration.

Ecology

My Master's thesis course work and project were in ecology. Ecology itself is a very broad topic and I have spent most of my studies looking at community dynamics and interactions as well as habitat composition. I think the fundamental key to understanding ecology is understanding how interconnected everything is and how the physical and biological environments interact with and affect one another.

Macintosh

I am well versed in the use of Mac computers and devices as well as Mac software.
I have been using OS X since it was first released. I use iWork, specifically Pages and Numbers, on a daily basis for my own business documents and organization. I also use Aperture daily for photography organization and re-touching.
I feel it is important for anyone using computers to also understand how to keep them running at their best by using Disk Utilities to check and repair their permissions and clean the cache.
I know how to performed simple maintenance upgrades such as RAM.
I have and use an iPad for both business and personal activities.

Photography

Throughout my schooling for from high school to my eventual master's degree I have attended photography classes. I used photography in my work and have since started my own photography business focused on pet portraits. I still spend time photographing nature as well as aviation.
I participate in local and international photo club activities to help improve my craft and share with others. I have been serving as a judge for the San Diego County Fair for the last 3 years.
My photographs have been published such books and magazines as Northwestern Gulf of California and Adjacent Desert, Sigma Best of Photography 2010, Balloon Life as well as the LMU newspaper. I have received awards from the Los Angeles County Fair, the San Diego County Fair, The Nature Conservancy, Nature & Eye Contest and was a finalist in the 30th Annual Spring Photographer’s Forum Contest.
I have also had work displayed at the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego Natural History Museum, Mission Trails Nature Center and other galleries.

Zoology

I have extensive experience in zoology through working at both the Los Angeles and San Diego Natural History museums. I also taught a biological diversity class at SDSU while working on my Master's degree in Marine Biology/Ecology.
I spent many years doing field work requiring the identification of invertebrates, fish, mammals and birds.
