I graduated from the University of California, Davis with a Bachelor's degree in Microbiology and a minor in history. I also have a Master's degree in Bioscience, with emphases in Pharmaceutical Development and Discovery and Business of Bioscience, from the Keck Graduate Institute in Claremeont. I am currently in my 7th year of my PhD in Microbiology at UC Davis. I have spent the last several years as a teaching assistant on campus in both lecture and lab classes of varying sizes. I've found that the most meaningful parts of my teaching are when I'm directly interfacing with students. I've had the opportunity to design my own review sessions and office hours, as well as run my own lab sections. It's those experiences, where I can interface with individual students, that I get a strong indication of how my teaching is affecting them and how I can best tailor my lessons to their needs. Whatever feedback I receive, I do my best to be open to it and respond accordingly. It's been particularly great watching some of my students move onto tutoring for the very classes I'm teaching, and to hear about their various paths beyond my classroom.

Math is a tricky subject for many, and I completely understand why. Especially as you get beyond basic arithmetic, it gets more and more difficult to see how the questions you're answering apply to the world around you, which makes it hard to connect with the material. I'm a big fan of logic puzzles, and to me, math was always a series of such puzzles. Figuring out how the pieces fit together was immensely interesting to me, but so was contextualizing that material and bringing some of it out into the real world with me. While I haven't taught math in my classes so far, subjects like algebra and geometry have become essential pieces of my knowledge base over the years.

I have had a great deal of experience teaching classes for microbiology and biochemistry, including 4 different lab classes ranging from advanced microbiology to food science, and 2 different biochemistry lectures. Both in the lab and in a lecture hall, I have felt comfortable and effective providing students with the tools they need to succeed. I felt comfortable being independent in my efforts, including building review sessions and individual lectures from scratch, and running my own office hours.

I spent all 4 of my undergraduate years in my campus debate club going to tournament after tournament with several different partners and debating a broad variety of different topics in Parliamentary Debate. Since then, I have participated in, judged, and coached for the UC Davis debate club, usually focusing on Parliamentary and British Parliamentary debate. I have also run a workshop at UC Davis addressing public speaking anxieties.

I am more than happy to talk to students and parents at any time, and am readily available by email. Please contact me with questions or to schedule a lesson!
