About Nicole

I am a graduate of the University of California, Davis with a PhD and over ten years of experience teaching at the college, high school, and middle school levels. I have worked with a huge diversity of students from different backgrounds and with different levels of experience, and find teaching to be incredibly rewarding. I have also been a student myself for much of my life and have developed a variety of teaching and study techniques that can be adapted to all kinds of topics and learning.

As a graduate student I taught lecture- and activity-based classes to students weekly to teach them the core concepts that are integral to understanding evolution and ecology, including aspects of mathematics, chemistry, and biology. Additionally, I worked with students in small groups to help them understand concepts more clearly. Through this I had the opportunity to develop a variety of teaching techniques to enable students to understand new material. In particular, I excel at helping students understand where the classroom meets the real world to enhance their understanding and comprehension of the topic in question. Additionally I have mentored students in research projects, teaching them the fundamentals of data collection, analysis, and report writing.

I have a strong background in mathematics and chemistry through my studies in biology, and have taught both basic mathematical concepts and more advanced concepts. As an ecology major and teacher of biology courses I have an excellent understanding of concepts in biology, ecology, evolution, and general life sciences from a variety of different perspectives. Furthermore, as someone who has taught students in different settings and with different goals for a number of years, I have encouraged many students to develop an independent approach to learning and take charge of their own education. Teaching is about more than good grades or cramming on concepts -- it is about having a strong understanding of topics and developing useful study habits that will persist beyond the length of one class.

My schedule is flexible and I am fun and enthusiastic about learning!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I received a 5 on the AP Biology exam in high school (and all 4s and 5s on other AP exams), and have been teaching introductory life sciences courses at UC Davis for the past three years.

Genetics

I have served as a teaching assistant for introductory and advanced biology and genetics courses. These courses include material on the mechanics of cellular genetics, population genetics, quantitative genetics, Mendelian genetics, and the role of genetics in evolution.

Microsoft Access

As part of professional positions and research I have manged multiple Access databases, including designing and implementing new databases and managing 100,000+ lines of data from my own research. I am familiar with query creation, table creation, data sorting, filtering, and writing scripts. I aided my major professor in teaching a Microsoft Access course to an undergraduate seminar in 2012.

Microsoft Excel

I have 10+ years of professional use of Excel for research and communication.

SAT Math

I got an 800 (out of 800) on my SAT math score in 2004 when I applied to college.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

After my daughters first tutoring session with Nicole, I asked how it went and she said "She made math easy!". She said Nicole was very patient, easy to talk to and felt comfortable asking her questions. We're looking forward to the next session!
