About Stephanie

My goal as a tutor is for students to walk away with skills that they can use for the rest of their lives. I work with students to help them break challenging projects and assignments down into manageable pieces, as well as teach strategies that make students better writers, learners, and thinkers. This approach builds confidence, which I have found to be a key element of academic success.

I have three years of experience tutoring students from the elementary to college level. I have worked with students of all backgrounds, including many students learning English as a second language. I have tutored students at the elementary level in all subjects, but primarily reading, grammar, phonics, writing, and social studies. I also have a great deal of experience working with students on personal statement essays, college essays in all fields of study, and various writing projects at all levels. I also have experience tutoring AP US History and college level history and political science courses.

At UC Santa Barbara I spent two years working as a tutor for our Campus Learning Assistance Services (CLAS) department. I also worked in the Academic Communities for Excellence program, which provides additional support to first generation college students. Many of my students in this program barely met (or did not meet) college proficiency standards for writing at the beginning of the term, but by the end of the year, one student had his work published! Nothing makes me happier than watching my students develop a passion for writing while expanding their skill set and gaining confidence.

I have fun getting to know the students that I work with, and I always find things that we have in common! I have always loved learning, and sharing my love of learning with others is something that I am passionate about. Feel free to contact me for regular meetings, as well as for help with one-time assignments, such as personal statement essays!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Political Science

I majored in political science at UCSB, with an emphasis in public policy. Some of my coursework included classes in research methods, foreign policy, environmental policy, education policy, public health, voting behavior, human rights, and NGOs. I also completed a 107 page senior honors thesis on the political implications of California's new education policies.

Religion

I double majored in political science and religious studies, and took a variety of classes in both areas. I enjoy tutoring writing and study skills in both subjects, as the conventions of each genre are unique, and I find them fun to work with!

Study Skills

As a writing tutor at UCSB, I was selected to tutor in the Academic Communities for Excellence (ACE) program, and tutored students in the program for one year. First year students in this program are usually first generation college students who do not meet the university's standards for writing. They work with the same tutor for two quarters to improve their writing and learn study skills necessary for success in the university environment.
