Pitzer College (Music)
Hello! I am a recent college graduate with a B.A. in Music. I have had a long relationship with music, and have been playing cello since I began at age 5. Playing music has been a central part of my life for as long as I can remember, and I am invested in working with students to allow them to grow, as they embark on their own musical journeys. I have experience teaching beginning and intermediate students as young as 10 years old, in their teens, as well as students in their 40s. I also have experience tutoring adult ESL learners in preparing for the US Naturalization Exam, and coaching elementary and middle school kids at a summer basketball camp.
I find tutoring and teaching to be an intriguing challenge--one that forces me to evaluate the needs of the student and myself, in a collaborative setting that mutually benefits both parties. In my eyes, to be a purveyor of knowledge is not necessarily the role of a tutor or teacher; instead, I think the responsibility entails more of empowering the student to learn and grow in a way that works best for them. Obviously, this requires flexibility on the part of the tutor--but an adaptive model of teaching truly enables the possibility of success for students of different backgrounds and learning styles.
I have been playing cello for 17 years, and have performed in various settings of high level music-making. I also have a B.A. in Music, which requires requisite skills of musicianship, such as ear training, listening skills, and music theory.
I was a 4 year NCAA Division III athlete, who also served as team captain of the Pomona-Pitzer Varsity Track and Field team.
I am looking forward to working with and learning more about potential students! Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. I am generally available during the week, and on Saturdays. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been playing cello for 17 years, studying privately for the entirety of those 17 years. I have played in various orchestras and chamber groups, and have attended such festivals as Music@Menlo, Round Top Festival Institute, and Marrowstone Summer Festival. I recently earned a B.A. in Music from Pitzer College, through the Pomona College Music Department, with a focus on cello performance. I have taught students of various ages in the past, including elementary students, high school students, and adult learners.
