About Joseph

I am a graduate of Oberlin College with honors in physics. While a student at Oberlin, I tutored freshman-level electricity and magnetism, corrected problem sets for courses of all levels, and taught a recreation course for several semesters. My greatest interest is in helping students with the tools that will allow them to succeed in math and the sciences as we work through specific material. I also like to focus on study methods and helping the students get the most out of lectures and their textbook.

While my degree is in physics, I can also tutor all the mathematics needed for an undergraduate education in physics such as calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations. As needed, I can also provide some guidance for some basic computer skills for the sciences such as the use of Mathematica and LaTex.

I also graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music have a Master of Music degree from the Jacob's School of Music where my secondary area of study was music theory and can tutor any area of music including theory, solfege, ear training, and history. For theory, I favor a voice-leading based approach to harmony such as that of Aldwell and Schachter and a historical approach to form. For ear training and solfege I rely on similar techniques, focusing on tendency tones and bass movements as well as traditional rhythm exercises and dictation.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

I have a BA in physics with honors. I have recent experience tutoring integral calculus (late semester).

Music Theory

I have a BM from Oberlin and a MM from the Jacobs School of Music where my secondary field of study was theory. I have studied personally with theorists like Darcy and Cadwallader.

Physics

Bachelors in physics with honors. I have experience tutoring mainly second semester physics, but first semester should pose no problem.
