With MS and MA degrees, twelve years teaching and curriculum development experience, and an extensive formal writing and public speaking background, I enthusiastically approach the learning needs of any motivated student. I hope to instill a love of learning in my students as well as help you all to master your targeted subjects.
As a teaching assistant at UC Davis, I tutored students towards approaching new subject material and breaking down barriers to organizing and tackling major papers. As a first grade teacher, I coordinated with parents to guide students through an accelerated reading program, and incorporated social studies and life sciences into the curriculum using maps, songs, stories, pictures, and manipulative objects. I created a tutorial program for a student with Asperger’s Syndrome using a series of Integrated Thematic Units. In summary, I will be creative about working with my students to find their best way to overcome challenges to learning.
I particularly enjoy working with students on essay writing and forming foundations for learning subjects that are new and very difficult for the individual. I can guide students through standardized test preparation, creating major papers, and becoming comfortable with mathematics. I received training to teach beginner Spanish through the Total Physical Response method. I have used a wide variety of approaches in a positive and supportive learning environment to teach English as a second language. My intervention students realized significant raises in English levels.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
From decades of personal experience, I have a very strong understanding of the challenges to studying and getting good grades with ADD. Although I have ADD, I have managed to obtain two master's degrees as well as a bilingual California teaching credential. For about five years, I received coaching from a psychiatrist and psychologist in coping with ADD while a graduate student at UC Davis. Furthermore, I have been involved with Dr. Edward Hallowell's ADD network; author of 'Driven to Distraction' and 'Delivered from Distraction,' he is highly regarded as a leader on the subject of ADD and education.
I can help students effectively network for assistance from organizations. I believe ADD should not be seen as a disorder; it is an alternative way of engaging with the world that gives one tremendous opportunities to excel when one faces challenges and creative tasks according to one's strongest style of approach. I want to be an advocate for people with ADD, and propose that it be regarded as Attention Inconsistency Syndrome.
I had religious education in elementary school, have studied the Bible on my own, and was confirmed in the Methodist Church. I also studied aspects of Christianity and other religions at UC Davis as a PhD student in geography. I believe that great moral lessons can be instilled in students through Bible studies. Furthermore, they will provide a powerful background from which to study and form one's personal philosophy of ethics.
I have a K-12 Teaching Certificate from UC Davis. I have had four years of experience teaching elementary education. I was a teacher in 1st and 5th grade classrooms. I am also bilingual in English/Spanish.
English has always been among my strongest subjects. In middle school, I was prepared with a strong foundation in grammar and literature, including a concentrated unit on poetry. In high school, I expanded upon this foundation with a series of specialized English courses, including Shakespeare, Utopian Literature, Man in Conflict, Fiction Writing, and Nobel Prize Winning Authors. I studied literature and writing courses in college, have continued with broad reading and writing in personal and professional life, and scored in the 93rd percentile on verbal GRE for admission into graduate school at UC Davis.
Professionally, I have a variety of published documents through contracts and taught essay writing as a teaching assistant at UC Davis from 2006 to 2011. I also participated in the UC Davis University Writing Program as well as the instructors' series workshops on teaching writing. I received the MA Geography degree from UC Davis with a 3.9 GPA, a process which required a great deal of writing. I taught a great deal of English in the public school system, levels 1st grade through high school, specializing in English as a second language learners (I hold a bilingual teaching credential from UC Davis). I taught adult ESL for the Woodland school system from 2003 to 2006.
Currently, I am tutoring students in essay writing and vocabulary in preparation for SAT exams.
Since 1991, I have been working with ESL programs and students ranging from elementary school to adult. I have been trained in the Total Physical Response Method and am certified as a bilingual teacher (English/Spanish) for the California public school system through the UC Davis program. I have lived, worked, and traveled for over five years in the Spanish speaking countries of Guatemala, Costa Rica, Paraguay, Dominican Republic, and Colombia.
I have an exceptionally strong background in English grammar and a lot of experience teaching it to students in my 1st and 5th grade classrooms, to people with English as a second language, and to university students to sharpen their essay skills. I believe that my success rates have been high because I use a variety of methods, for example, color coding parts of speech on cards and then putting the cards together to form sentences, pictures, and question and answer sessions.
I realize that grammar is an area that causes a lot of discomfort and frustration to many people and am very sympathetic and patient when imparting the lessons. Furthermore, I can usually put an element of fun into the process.
I had a very strong phonics background as an elementary student. My academic understanding of phonics was intensified through my study for attaining the CA K-12 multi-subject teaching credential, my experiences as a public school educator, studies of foreign languages, and in my teaching of languages--both Spanish and English as a Second Language.
I love public speaking. I was highly encouraged on my abilities while in Toastmasters International, and became the local chapter president. I have helped classmates and friends as well as my students, understanding that it is among the greatest of shared fears on a population level.
I am moving towards specializing in standardized test preparation. I encourage my clients to take a big game approach to preparing for their test. This includes identification of strengths and weaknesses and assigning time blocks of concentration and reevaluation accordingly. There are many resources available for help and a good coach can help one stay on track.
I have three years of experience as a teaching assistant in sociology courses at UC Davis. I can help students for an understanding of the history and foundations of sociology from which to approach sociology courses in general.
I am a certified bilingual K-12 teacher for California public schools; teaching credential from UC Davis, 2000. I have been trained in and used a variety of language acquisition methods, including Total Physical Response.
I have lesson and material development experience for teaching Spanish and more than 5 years experience living/working/studying in Guatemala, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Paraguay, Colombia, Honduras, Mexico, and El Salvador; I traveled in Spain as well. I worked on Peace Corps and National Geographic projects.
I have teaching experience--elementary to adult beginner levels-- in Spanish, English as a Second Language, bilingual classroom.
Besides working to instill study skills in my classroom students, I have studied their mastery, tried and honed various approaches in my pursuits in college and graduate school. I was particularly inspired by Mortimer Adler's classic, How to Read a Book, and have developed various study guides for my university students.
Since 2005, I have been helping UC Davis students improve their writing skills across several subjects, concentrating on thesis statement; word choice; making writing more concise and powerful; paragraph organization; and grammar. I have published papers and manuals in agriculture and agricultural extension methods for scholarly, organizational, and government documents. As a PhD student at UC Davis, I received training through the university writing program.
