About Elizabeth

I'm Elizabeth and I'm a student at UC Davs. I've been playing piano for almost 12 years, taking lessons for about 10 years. I've taught a few students in my lifetime--with different level ranges (from beginner to more advanced levels). Back when I was still competing, I've only played 1st and 2nd in all my competitions, nothing less. A few years back, I outgrew all my competitors in my level and was not allowed to compete anymore, so I became one of the judges in the competition.

I am a patient tutor, and all my piano students have shown positive and obvious results. As a tutor, I make sure my students master certain aspects of piano before moving on, but at the same time, be able to have fun and play whatever they like. My tutoring methods change per student because everyone has a different way of learning how to play piano and require different methods of being taught.

While many tutors and teachers just teach to earn money, I just want to work with students and help them excel in piano. I'm willing to go the extra mile for my students, and I will make sure they succeed and be a substantially better piano player than they were before.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I've tutored Algebra I and Algebra II to a few different students, all of which did substantially better (with A's in their classes).

I normally help students with their homework and give them additional practice problems. I then observe what types of questions they have trouble with and teach them those concepts.

Many teachers at school normally make concepts much more difficult than it should be, and I simplify information to make it easier to understand.

ESL/ESOL

I'm Chinese, so I am proficient in Cantonese because I've spoken the language all my life. I'm also partially proficient in Mandarin, as I've learned it for 5 years back in high school. I will use my knowledge in those languages to help my students in improving their English.

The way I teach will depend on the student. Flashcards always help in remembering certain words. I will also teach grammar, showing my students that English grammar is different from Chinese grammar.

I've also worked with many people who have trouble with English in the past, so I know how to explain and teach information in a simple way for them to understand. Many times, only English-speaking individuals do not know how to communicate with people who cannot speak English as well. However, I will be able to translate to my student, as well as, speaking in English to my student often, so he or she can learn English quickly.

I know theory and how to write music. I can teach a wide range of music genres (from classical and blues to modern pop and rock), whichever the student prefers. I also teach my students how to sight read music and train their music listening skills.

Great tutor — Elizabeth did excellent job teaching English/conversations to two 16-year-old Japanese girls who spoke very little English and just arrived from Japan. Elizabeth was well prepared, on time and had an interactive lesson plan for them. As a Chinese American, Elizabeth knew how to teach ESL students and opened their shy attitude to speak English. After each lesson, girls pointed out me that they ...
