About Jackson

Hello! My name is Jackson. I graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara. During my time as an upperclassman at UCSB I worked for the university as a tutor, assisting freshmen and sophomores in courses covering math, physics, chemistry, and more.

As a tutor, my primary goal is to help students gain an intuitive understanding of the subject matter. Whether a student is falling behind and needs to catch up or wants to maximize their performance in the classroom I’ve found that developing a meaningful understanding of the core concepts of the subject matter leads to increased performance in their current classes and prepares them for success in future courses that build upon the current material. In order to help individual students gain a strong understanding of subject material, I focus on diagnosing what part of a topic is causing a student’s struggling and working with them until they have a fundamental understanding of the concept. My favorite part of tutoring is watching a student who was previously struggling with a subject master the material and gain confidence answering questions on homework and exams.

I have over a year experience tutoring at high school and college levels. I work primarily in a one-on-one setting and am dynamic in my tutoring approach to help meet each student’s individual needs. I have helped students who were failing bring their grades up to above average levels, B students improve to A’s, and everything in between. As a tutor, my goal is to help my students fulfill their potential to succeed.

My effectiveness as a math tutor stems from two main skills: my ability to intuitively understand complex math and science topics and my ability to communicate this understanding to students. In math and science especially, an deep understanding of the subject matter is necessary to succeed, and I am able to recognize where a student is struggling, work with them to build an understanding of the material, and ultimately help them achieve their academic goals.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Differential Equations

I have passed a college level Differential Equations course (Math 4B at UCSB) with a grade of A. I have experience tutoring this subject through my position at Campus Learning Assistance Services at UCSB. I graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California.

Linear Algebra

I have passed a college level Linear Algebra course (Math 4A at UCSB) with a grade of A+. I have experience tutoring this subject through my position at Campus Learning Assistance Services at UCSB.

MATLAB

I have experience using MATLAB from my undergraduate curriculum as a mechanical engineer. I have taken one course which teaches MATLAB syntax specifically, two courses which focus on numerical methods using MATLAB, and have used MATLAB for various other courses as a tool to solve homework problems, process data, and create visualizations. I have experience tutoring younger university students in their MATLAB courses, and have tutored students in coding principles for other courses as well.

Mechanical Engineering

I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara and have experience assisting younger MEs through volunteer peer tutoring programs and paid tutoring positions.
