About Ken

For over 20 years, I have been teaching, training & tutoring in many different forms. Working in small groups and one-on-one, I love interacting with students, asking them questions & getting them to ask questions of their own. That give-and-take is where true learning really happens, but the great payoff comes when the student gets it — when the bulb clicks on and the light flashes in their eyes.

I also employ a modified EDGE method (Explain-Demonstrate-Guide-Enable), particularly with grammar, math & test prep. It is important to understand how students are thinking before trying to correct any errors; that way, they are not just repeating by rote what they are told.

My education includes a degree in English (emphasis in writing) and an MBA, so I like to apply the skills in practical ways. I have worked extensively in educational & business environments with students ranging from junior high school through post-graduate studies. I have studied English, literature, mathematics & finance, and I have applied them in the real world. I can help students in all of these areas.

My goal always is to teach for a mastery of the subject because that has much longer-term benefit to the student.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

In 2012, I was awarded a Certificate of Christian Ministry from the East Bay School of Ministry (which was an accredited school briefly associated with East Bay Foursquare Church in Danville, CA). Coursework included classes on the Old Testament, New Testament, the Life of Christ, Acts of the Apostles, the Psalms & Biblical Interpretation. In addition to the Bible, study for these courses included books by Philip Yancy, Peter Scazzero, Lee Strobel, and others. My GPA for the certificate program was 4.0.

Public Speaking

Marketing, sales & business development are the most significant roles on my resume, which is summarized below. Public speaking is key to success in these areas and others, and I have done a considerable amount, including:

Conference Presentations, Roundtables & Keynotes
Local Government Presentations (e.g., County & City Councils)
Forum Moderation
Classroom Lectures
Customer & Market Presentations (inc. in-person & on-line)

I have an MBA (St Mary's College, 1997) and 25+ years in business experience. Briefly, my resume includes management roles such as:

Principal / Founder at PATENT SAVANT (start-up software)
Principal / Founder at Keychain Logic (consulting)
VP Sales at PAIX.net / Switch & Data (internet services)
Director Business Development at PAIX.net (internet services)
Sr Manager Business Development at MCI / WorldCom (telecom)
Manager Cost Studies at ALLTEL (telecom)
General Manager at RD Chemical (manufacturing)

I have taught classes & led seminars addressing evolving ideas and methods for sales, marketing, business development & entrepreneurship.

Religion

In addition to the Bible, study for these courses included books by Philip Yancy, Peter Scazzero, Lee Strobel, and others. My GPA for the certificate program was 4.0.

In addition, I have taken college-level courses in comparative religions and read other faiths' texts, such as the Edda (Asatru), the Analects (Confucianism), the Vedas (Hinduism), the Tanakh (Judaism), and the Ramayana (Hindu). Additional reading / study include the works of writers like Richard Dawkins (atheism), Deepak Chopra, Thomas Paine (e.g., The Age of Reason) and Homer's epic poems.
