I am a California Credentialed science teacher working as a science (chemistry and biology) teacher. I believe literacy across content areas is the key to success for any student. As a scientist and science teacher, my goal is to help students understand how important science is in their everyday lives and how science literacy empowers them to become more capable twenty-first century citizens.
I am a scientist with 20-year experience in diagnostic diseases and drug discovery. My work required me to work with a team of dedicated professionals and publish our findings to communicate and explain the discoveries. During my research activities, I had the opportunity to train a group of high school interns for their biotech certificates. Training these young interns inspired me to become a science teacher. I discovered a new kind of work satisfaction when my interns told me, “You are a good teacher! We learned so much from working with you…” Feeding my interns’ desire to learn science felt more rewarding than my experimental results, and I am proud to say that some of my interns chose biology and chemistry as majors in college.
My volunteer work at Jefferson HS, student teaching at Lowell HS, teaching at Grant HS, South San Francisco HS made me aware of the importance of developing a science literacy for my students. Although most of my students were proficient in English, they still had difficulty understanding science texts. Science has a complex vocabulary that is difficult even for native English speakers; talking and writing about science means doing science through keen observations, written descriptions, data analyses and evaluations. For me, science literacy means using key vocabulary to explain complex concepts and, most important of all, developing the ability to think scientifically. I think the specialized language of the science textbooks, fast-paced classes, and a lack of support for students after class makes science classes intimidating to students. I noticed that most of my students find difficult to read science texts in order to define scientific concepts. I want to help my students to learn how to study chemistry and biology and how to apply the concepts they learn in exercises. I am a teacher that motivates students to discover their strengths and talents; I also want to transfer my passion for science to my students so that they, too, become science professionals in the future. I can be a role model for all my students, particularly ELL students, who can develop confidence and have academic success through science literacy.
I heard many times students saying that chemistry is “hard.” Being organized could help them to make it easier. I usually communicate to students what is expected to be learned, emphasize what is important, and how to learn the concepts. In the same time, I will ask my students to be organized and self-disciplined in their study.
My goal is to combine my range of experience with my ability to be a compassionate and enthusiastic teacher to help my student be successful in their chemistry and biology classes, SAT exams, and beyond. Mariana was very helpful in preparing me for 2 separate exams. She went over an exam review sheets with me on two separate occasions. She was able to provide excellent background to very complex chemistry word problems. She makes sure that you can produce the question on your own, before moving on.
I am taking Chemistry as a pre req for the nursing program and Mariana helped me with my struggles in Chemistry/ Math. I haven't taken a math course in about 8 years so I've been pretty lost in my class. Mariana taught me techniques that I need to apply to get the correct answers.
Mariana is a very knowledgeable and helpful tutor. She makes the hardest topics that my son struggles with the most easy to understand. She has a very unique teaching style (power point presentation, etc) that helps my son comprehend the lesson. My son is now doing much better in Chemistry.
I am enrolled in a nursing program. Chemistry was the most difficult subject for me, but not any longer. With Mariana's help, chemistry became interesting and enjoyable. She is the best teacher I have ever met. She taught me how to learn chemistry: how to understand and memorize the chemical laws and concepts, how to solve word problems, how to study. Mariana taught me study skills techniques: organizing my notes, improving my memory, critical thinking, building concept maps in the process of reviewing for exams. I believe that because she is a scientist her teaching is enhanced by practical examples and parallels from everyday life that helps in the process on learning and recalling the learned material. Mariana cares for her students. She is interested to help her students to become independent learners. Thanks to Mariana, my grade went up to A in only a couple of meetings.
Mariana is a passionate, knowledgeable chemistry tutor. She cares about my daughter’s understanding in each class. She prepares each class ahead of time, which targets my daughter’s questions and concerns. Great tutor. Highly recommended!
Mariana has gone to great lengths to understand where my son is struggling in Chemistry. My son understands the subject when Mariana explains, he is now doing a lot better in Chemistry. Thank you.
Mariana prepared the subject material ahead of time. My son found the tutor session very helpful and effective. Highly recommend.
Mariana is all about educating her students beyond just getting a question right. She helps you understand concepts which helps to provide a better and complete understanding of the topic. Sessions are very organized and her study materials are great, she really cares about her students and it shows.
My daughter really enjoyed Chemistry tutoring sessions with Mariana. Mariana is well organized, thorough and really cares about students understanding the material. My daughter's grade improved after only a few sessions. It was a pleasure working with her. I highly recommend her!
Mariana is a wonderful. Her wealth of knowledge on chemistry is absolutely beneficial to me, since I have none! She is patient and resourceful when explaining principles and formulas too. I can't wait to apply what I've learned with Mariana once my classes start. I've never been so excited to start a science class as I am now.
Throughout the whole year, I feel Mariana is an excellent Chemistry teacher. She is very patient, determined, motivated to teach and very thorough with her explanations. Her explanations are very clear and understandable. Not only does she want me to get the right answer, but she wants me to understand the material. Overall, she is a highly recommended tutor for Chemistry.
I had a very shaky foundation in chemistry and had an exam in a week. Mariana helped me to understand the basics and that helped me to be confident and pass my test. She was also flexible with scheduling. Thanks, Mariana!
I searched for a tutor everywhere to help me study for my exam in my Chem class, and boy, was I lucky to find Mariana! She responded to my message very quickly and we were able to set up time for our tutoring. She helped me prepare for the test perfectly! She explained the material very clearly and went through some problems with me to make sure I know how to apply the rules to exercises. I am completely confident that I am prepared, and I highly recommend Mariana to everyone! You will be just as grateful to her as I am!
She really cares about her students' understanding and genuinely wants her subject to be learned. Some students just want to get good grades, but Mariana goes beyond how to get a good grade- she explains the "why" behind the answers to problems. She expects effort from her students, but she gives her full effort in return. She gave up a high-paying job at a pharmaceutical company to become a teacher because she believes in the future generation and she wants the future to have educated people. She assigns homework exercises, but they are fun to do if you understand the concepts, and Mariana does well making sure you do. Some students may have difficulties with her accent when she pronounces words that could easily sound like different words when one syllable changes, but a quick clarifying question should clear up any confusion a student may have. Overall, she is a very good choice for a tutor if you are interested in completely understanding the subject matter rather than simply receiving an A in school. She isn't a good choice for you if you just want to get an A, get the answers easily, and do little to no work. She will make you do work and she will ask you questions until you really get it, but she offers a lot for how little she charges for sessions.
Mariana really has a love for Chemistry and it shows in her tutoring. She was able to help my daughter grasp concepts and better understand her own teacher's assignments. My daughter left her hour of tutoring feeling confident that she can tackle her assignments and upcoming test. We feel very fortunate to have found such a patient and knowledgeable Chemistry tutor. Thank you WyzAnt and Mariana!
Mariana was very patient, kind and accommodating to my sister. She is not only extremely well versed in the subject matter but also possesses very good values. We were very much appreciative of her effort and time. She is highly recommended!
Mariana is a jewel. She is very patient and prepares her lesson targeted to each individual and his/her current syllabus topic. Since she has a science background, she is able to relate the class material to real life application. This is important since a lot of Chemistry is theoretical and non-tangible. My son has lost his fear of Chemistry and looks forward to learning in his class. We are very lucky to have found her as a Chemistry tutor.
She is patient and conscientious, and sends my daughter PowerPoint presentations to help her study. My daughter finds her a very good tutor.
My daughter has Mariana as her chemistry tutor. Mariana is very patient and really cares for her student. She would ask for my daughter's lesson ahead of time to get the material ready and encourages questions.
Mariana was very friendly, nice and comfortable to work with for my online chemistry class. She is enthusiastic about the topics she covers and has a genuine interest in her students. I recommend Mariana to anyone in need of a Chemistry tutor.
Thank you Mariana!
Mariana is encouraging, patient and very efficient. She provides comments, suggestions and tricks for my son to excel. I recommend her to anyone. You will not waste your time or money with her. She is an excellent tutor!
Mariana was very concerned about meeting my daughter's needs at the tutoring session. My daughter had never been tutored in Chemistry, but had many questions when reviewing for an exam and requested a tutor. Mariana went to great lengths to get topics in advance so that she could bring appropriate study examples. She truly cared about preparing my daughter for the exam, and did a great job.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I got my MS in a program called "Technology of Organic Chemistry" I studied Organic Chemistry and its application in different fields like drugs, dyes, soap and detergents, polymers, etc. I am confident that I can answer the requirements for Organic Chemistry tutoring, from the chemical bonds and structures of the organic compounds, to all the physical and chemical proprieties of alcohols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, amines, amides, and other organic substances.
