Nihon University (Art, Film)
I have been teaching Japanese for over twenty years. I'm very flexible for all types of situations. My teaching experience includes a classroom setup, individual tutoring, personal or business oriented lessons. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced, I can prepare lessons for your specific needs. You'll be excited to speak new expressions in Japanese after each lesson. I have several students who have been taking my lessons for over 15 years and they can't be wrong!

The rate is basically for per student. For tutoring multiple students at a time, the rate is multiplied. For a class style, the rate can be negotiable.
Alex is a great Japanese tutor who has allowed me to learn Japanese at a comfortable yet rapid pace. He has increased my confidence when speaking, writing, listening to, and reading Japanese.
As someone who had not spoken Japanese with anybody prior to our lessons, I would recommend Alex Sensei. The lessons are well structured and customized to one's progress. It's easy to fall into the trap of being over-confident when primarily studying from a textbook because you are not forced to interact and the exercises can be a bit formulaic. Alex Sensei provides me with that interaction coupled with immediate feedback. He also provides me with supplementary exercises such as transcribing previously unfamiliar katakana (a tough exercise). His sense of humor helps too.
Chris san, thank you very much for such a wonderful comment! Receiving a such comment from you is very encouraging. It's always rewarding to see my students enjoy and learn from my lessons. I'll continue my effort to improve your Japanese for each lesson.
I really enjoyed our first meeting. Alex was very kind and helpful tutor. He was encouraging and even as I made mistakes. I think I can learn a lot from working with him.
Thank you for your wonderful feedback Onyebuchi! It's always very encouraging to hear a positive feedback from a new student. I do my best to let you learn and understand Japanese in the most efficient way possible.
I have recently started receiving lessons from Alex, and have found him to be an excellent tutor. He strikes a good balance between pushing you to think, read, and speak at a natural pace (i.e. fairly quick) and giving you time to process a new word, difficult passage, etc. It's important to maintain the pace so you can cover everything you need in a lesson, and it's good for mental agility, too, in my opinion. He is quick to correct without making you feel as though you've been interrupted (it's important to get the feedback but also maintain the flow of what you're reading, for example). We speak only a little English during our time, which is obviously important, and he does not slow down his speech for me. It's my guess that he tailors this to the student's level, but at least for my level, I think it's helpful for improving my listening skills. Alex is clearly very experienced, and it shows in his ability to make good use of an hour's lesson. Each time I leave feeling as though I got two hours of instruction, practice, and feedback in a single hour.
Thank you so much for such insightful and encouraging comments, Cat! I always observe my student's pace and skill level so that I can tailor the lesson for each student. I'm happy to know my method is working for you. You already have wide knowledge of words and culture of Japanese. That makes my job easy as a tutor. Your comprehension is quick and your retention is excellent. It's really luxury to have a student like yourself.
Alex is a wonderful teacher. He is dedicated to his students and is willing to help however he can. If you're looking for a japanese teacher, look no further!
Matthew san, thank you so much for your kind comment! Your enthusiasm and determination for learning Japanese are encouraging and they make my work such pleasure. Keep it up with your diligence!
This is my 4th lesson with Mr. Alex Toshiaki. He is very knowledgeable and helps me understand fully each lesson. He keeps the lessons at a good pace for me and I enjoy learning Japanese with him.
My daughters are 10 and 7 and are both enjoying their Japanese lessons from Sensei (Alex). He's able to assess my girls and tailor his lesson plan to their personalities, all the while keeping them engaged and enjoying themselves. I highly recommend Alex for your tutoring needs.
Thank you so much for the encouraging comment Melissa! It's such a pleasure to tutor your daughters.
Alex is very easy going and nice. I immediately felt comfortable talking with him and he was very patient with my first-lesson anxiety.
We really appreciated that Alex Toshiaki took the time to review the material needed to make the most of the sessions. He was able to condense and concentrate on areas that needed improvement. He was prompt, patient and knowledgeable. We would highly recommend him.
Thank you Tina for your kind feedback! I find it very encouraging. I really enjoyed tutoring your son. I wish good luck to his future study.
Alex has taught my daughter how to speak more fluently and the basics of Japanese sentence structure and grammar. He also taught her new vocabulary and simple conversation dialogues.
Within 2 minutes of my daughter's first lesson Alex had her saying greetings in Japanese. The hour flew by and she's eager for the next one!
Alex is such a great tutor. He not only teaches my son reading, writing and speaking Japanese, he also prepares course work, includes homework assignments, and even suggests Japanese movies and shows to watch. I cannot believe how much my son is learning so quickly. Thank you.
I've been attending lessons with Alex Sensei for over a month now and it's been a great way for me to pick up my Japanese studies again after last studying in college more than 10 years ago.
He suggested a couple options for textbooks and I chose Genki, the same one I'd used in college, but a new and improved version. In addition to using the textbook, Alex Sensei keeps the lessons interesting with Q&A, role-playing, and listening challenges (humbling, but super interesting.)
I'm planning a trip to Japan next year and I'm confident that if I keep up with my Japanese lessons, Alex Sensei will help me get into good shape for handling travel situations and also having interesting conversations beyond basic greetings and introductions.
As long as you're not going to schedule anything during my normal lesson time, I highly recommend trying out a lesson with Alex Sensei!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I'm a seasoned Japanese tutor and I have a strong passion in what I do.
