I am a musician and teacher. I sing, play piano, and write and arrange various styles of music. I sing in an acappella group, Frequency, a community choir, Long Beach Camerata Singers, my own jazz trio, and some local theatre, etc. I also TEACH voice and piano at Los Angeles Harbor College, Cal Poly Pomona, Bellflower Community Center, and privately from my home in Bellflower. I have 14 years of experience teaching voice and piano. I hold a Bachelors degree in music education (cum laude) and a Master's of Music in vocal performance (both from Cal State Long Beach, Bob Cole Conservatory). I teach all styles of singing, from jazz to opera. I am an extremely versatile musician and personally perform classical, jazz, musical theatre, pop, gospel, choral, a cappella, and contemporary Christian styles. Usually, vocal teachers either approach teaching singing from a bel canto, primarily operatic approach and are quite unfamiliar with contemporary styles OR they are rather uneducated about the technical aspects of the vocal pedagogy and attempt to coach the novice "pop" singer using rather unhealthy techniques. I am somewhat unique in my approach to the voice, utilizing BOTH bel canto, proven healthy techniques AND still understanding how to modify these techniques to suit many contemporary styles of singing. I am confident that I can help you improve your singing!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taken 7 semesters of music theory throughout my studies and am quite competent to teach beginning composition. I have written and arranged around 40 pieces and can pass on this knowledge and help others with their work. I have a working knowledge of chord progression and analysis. I have helped a number of students in the passed to write songs assisting with potential chord, melodies and lyrics.
Similarly to the other music subjects, I have taught music for years and have taught ear-training many times. To achieve a master's degree in vocal performance, one must take many classes to improve ear training. For many years I have been a professional choral section leader, pianist, and conductor, all of which require exception ear training skills. I have taught many students to improve their ear and master other relevant musical skills
