I help my students master a variety of subjects in math and science. I do this with confidence, having 3 years and almost 2000 hours experience in tutoring, and having worked for 10 years before that in both online and classroom education. I have an MSEE/BSEE from MIT and an MBA from UC Davis.

My primary subjects include high school Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, Statistics, Physics and Chemistry including Honors and AP level in all of those subjects. At the college-level, I tutor in electrical engineering, including circuits, systems, logic, control, and transistors, and in probability and statistics. I sometimes tutor in Writing, and junior high students in math and science.

My approach is to get to know each student’s individual learning style and needs and then find a way to best meet those needs. I focus on developing both deep understanding and problem-solving skills; believing that both conceptual and practical knowledge are necessary to master a subject. I encourage my students to take ownership of their learning by putting them in the “driver’s seat” – which means coming to each session prepared with the concepts and problems they want to address. I also ask all my students to take ownership of their own motivation. I constantly evaluate my effectiveness and seek ways to innovate and improve. My intention is to aid students complete courses, so I do not impose additional reading, assignments or problems unless asked. I evaluate students abilities based on how they respond to concepts presented and approach problems; I do not have an independent set of diagnostic tools at my disposal.

Schedule: Generally, weekdays 2pm-9pm PT, Saturday 9am-1pm, and Sunday 1pm-9pm, I am available to work with local high-school students. Weekdays 9am-2pm, I am available for college students. I do not schedule sessions on Saturday afternoons, Saturday evenings or Sunday mornings.

NB: Due to the recent health crisis, I am not taking any new face-to-face clients; all new students will be entirely

I have used statistics many times in my career as an engineer, I have also taught and tutored statistics in an online school, and also have a certification in big data analysis (which is based entirely on statistics).

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have tutored numerous students in Algebra 1 for many years. My focus is on helping my students understand key concepts, and know how to solve problems. I orient my approach to the individual needs of each student, and look for ways to make the lessons interesting and relevant to them.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is one of my favorite subjects because it teaches students methods for dealing with complex problems. Many students find these challenging, even overwhelming, however with just a little insight, confidence and practice these can be easily conquered - the lessons learned can be applied to any challenging area of life.
Calculus,

Calculus

I have been actively tutoring Calculus AB for 3 years, having worked with approximately a dozen students. I first learned Calculus 42 years ago as a high senior and engineering student, and have actively used it throughout my professional career. In order to prepare to tutor, I re-studied the subject on my own 3 years ago.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

I have taught and tutored chemistry for last 12 years.
Geometry,

Geometry

I privately tutor a dozen or more students in Geometry every year. I also teach Geometry at the Art of Problem Solving, to classes of up to 16 students at a time. These experiences have helped me develop specialized techniques for helping students develop expertise in the areas of geometry that most people consider difficult - for example, 2-column proofs.
Physics,

Physics

I have taught and tutored Physics for the last 12 years. I have MSEE and BSEE degrees from MIT.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Pre-Calculus is one of my most popular subjects. I tutor 1-2 dozen students in Pre-Calculus every year. I frequently tutor Honors and AP Pre-Calculus as well.
Statistics,

Electrical Engineering,

Electrical Engineering

My qualifications are that I hold a BSEE and MSEE from MIT. I have worked for 35 years as an engineer or in engineering companies. Areas of expertise include basic electronics, circuit theory, logic, transistor theory, active circuits, microprocessors, communications, semiconductors, power supplies, A/Ds and discretes.

I have taught and tutored Probability for the past 12 years, and have also used it during my career. I aced it in college, and it's one of my best subjects.
Statistics,

I have used statistics many times in my career as an engineer, I have also taught and tutored statistics in an online school, and also have a certification in big data analysis (which is based entirely on statistics).
Trigonometry,

Trigonometry

Trigonometry gets students to think about math from a whole new angle - from the perspective of a circle instead of the square grid used in Algebra - and is the foundation for architecture, civil and electrical engineering. Sines and cosines are expressions of complex exponential functions which are the core of calculus. A thorough understanding of trigonometry is vital to any student moving into these fields.

Bill is positive and helpful

We're working on the test for Bart. He is helping me find the answers within myself. I strongly recommend a lesson or 2 with Bill before taking any electrical engineering or technician test.

Knowledgeable and friendly tutor

My son is doing some independent study to prepare for high school. Bill has been a great help, providing additional instruction where needed. He's very knowledgeable and has an easy manner so my son enjoys working with him and is confident that Bill can answer his questions. My experience with Bill suggests that he would also be a supportive and helpful resource for someone who is struggling.
