Approach: Middle school / High school - I seek to know your learning style and any weak areas and then tailor instruction to your specific style and needs. I strongly believe that to be effective, instruction needs to be tailored to the needs of each student, and I am adept at finding new ways to teach difficult concepts. I focus both on conceptual understanding and mastering of technique.

Approach: College students - I seek to come along side you, understand the problems you are trying to tackle, and work with you to understand and gain mastery of important concepts.

Engagement - Middle school/High school - generally available Monday-Thursday evening, Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon. See schedule for specifics; contact me to check for openings.

Engagement: College (please read) - Generally available Monday-Thursday mornings. Steps: 1)Via Wyzant, please e-mail me a document of what you are working on, and when it is due, and when you are available to meet. (Note: I work best when I have at least a day to look at your problem and work on it before we meet). 2)I will respond with a decision and a proposed time to meet. 3)You agree/commit - after that I will charge you for up to an hour for any time I spend working on your problem, even if you subsequently dis-engage.

I strongly believe in good teaching. My goal is to help every student develop his or her individual talents and gifts, and to make learning a fun and enjoyable experience, characterized by kindness, sensitivity and caring. Every student has the ability to be an academic conqueror with perseverance and a committed teacher.

Special Note 10/9/19: I am being affected by the Northern California power emergency. For the next several days I may not be able to immediately see or respond to your requests, but I will do my best.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have tutored numerous students in Algebra 1 for many years. My focus is on helping my students understand key concepts, and know how to solve problems. I orient my approach to the individual needs of each student, and look for ways to make the lessons interesting and relevant to them.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is one of my favorite subjects because it teaches students methods for dealing with complex problems. Many students find these challenging, even overwhelming, however with just a little insight, confidence and practice these can be easily conquered - the lessons learned can be applied to any challenging area of life.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

I have taught and tutored chemistry for last 12 years.

Electrical Engineering,

Electrical Engineering

My qualifications are that I hold a BSEE and MSEE from MIT. I have worked for 35 years as an engineer or in engineering companies. Areas of expertise include basic electronics, circuit theory, logic, transistor theory, active circuits, microprocessors, communications, semiconductors, power supplies, A/Ds and discretes.

Physics

I have taught and tutored Physics for the last 12 years. I have MSEE and BSEE degrees from MIT.
Probability,

Probability

I have taught and tutored Probability for the past 12 years, and have also used it during my career. I aced it in college, and it's one of my best subjects.

Trigonometry,

Trigonometry

Trigonometry gets students to think about math from a whole new angle - from the perspective of a circle instead of the square grid used in Algebra - and is the foundation for architecture, civil and electrical engineering. Sines and cosines are expressions of complex exponential functions which are the core of calculus. A thorough understanding of trigonometry is vital to any student moving into these fields.

Knowledgeable and friendly tutor

My son is doing some independent study to prepare for high school. Bill has been a great help, providing additional instruction where needed. He's very knowledgeable and has an easy manner so my son enjoys working with him and is confident that Bill can answer his questions. My experience with Bill suggests that he would also be a supportive and helpful resource for someone who is struggling.
