About Djibril

My experience in tutoring began when I was in high school. I was awarded a prize in the National Olympiad of Mathematics in my country, Senegal. Since we did not win such prize for seven consecutive years, the dean proposed me to tutor the future candidates. I tutored them during the following year; three of them were laureates. Then I came to De Anza College where I worked since winter 2014. For my pedagogy, I worked for the MPS program in which students who failed to pass their classes after multiple attempts were enrolled. I also provide free tutoring for elderly people who have a full-time job. Thus I have developed over time various strategies adaptable according to the characteristics of the person I tutor.

I learned from my experience in tutoring that most people think that mathematics is a difficult subject because they do not know how to study it. So in my first tutoring sessions, I focus on understanding the methods that the students use to study, and analyzing the problem-solving skills they possess. Some sessions will involve a lot of theoretical explanations, with visual representations, depending on the need of the student. The whole point is to combine the mathematical concepts the tutee knows in a structural map that will allow him/her to see the existing connections. Scientific students in particular will often be asked to demonstrate formulas and prove theorems. I believe it is the best way to make students become not only better masters of their knowledge, but also better learners.

I will be available anytime, and the student will be able to ask questions by sending me messages or emails. Other alternatives will be discussed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

I began studying calculus when I was in high school. It was far more advanced than the one given in AP exams. It was more about the demonstrations of formulas as well as the studies of the general cases that most exercises relate to. Integrals, as well as their relationship to differential equations, are my speciality.

Differential Equations

Having studied integrals for more 4 years justifies my capabilities in dealing with differential equations. As a researcher, I am currently working on turning differential equations into different integrals to be solved or at least reduce the degree of the equation by associating an intermediary integral to it.

French

I have studied in French for more than 13 years in high school. I did three years of french literature just before I graduated. I also completed one year of french philosophy with a focus on Descartes' work.

Linear Algebra

I am currently studying Big Data analytics and Machine Learning which are subjects where Linear Algebra is widely used for computations. So even though I have not studied linear algebra for that long (6 months), I believe I am knowledgeable about it.
