About Paul

Hello! My passion is teaching, and I have the experience and skills necessary to make sure that you or your child succeeds! I graduated Summa Cum Laude with departmental and college honors with dual bachelor degrees in Sociology and Spanish Language, with a minor in Global Studies. Immediately after I graduated, I joined the U.S. Peace Corps in Ukraine, where I gained extensive teaching and cross-cultural experience teaching English, Spanish, and Leadership to over 120 students in 5th through 11th grades. I also directed several summer camps, giving me a broad, well-rounded experience with children and young adults of all ages.

I specialize in tutoring Spanish, having lived abroad in both Spain and Costa Rica en route to my bachelor's degree. Additionally, I teach English lessons of all types, as well as English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. I also specialize in test preparation. My goal, no matter what subject I am teaching, is to engage all students in their own learning process, through interactive and creative teaching methods. I feel very strongly about my students' success, and to this end I create a caring, open environment in the classroom in which students feel comfortable to seek help and feedback in whatever way they need it. I always encourage an open and honest relationship with students, and therefore, encourage all feedback.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I taught English in the Peace Corps in Ukraine from 2012 - 2014. This experience included teaching children from elementary to high school levels, as well as adults. I also have experience tutoring English to adults here in the USA while I was studying at UCLA.

ESL/ESOL

I taught adults and children English as a full time teacher in Ukraine with the US Peace Corps from 2012 to 2014. I taught ESL classes to adults at USA from 2011 to 2012.

Grammar

I taught extensive English grammar in the Peace Corps in Ukraine from 2012-2014. This experience includes work with non-native speakers from the very beginning to very advanced levels from elementary to high school level. I have also taught adult learners of English here in the USA, and have experience covering almost every possible grammar concept.

Guitar

I studied guitar formally for over ten years, from 1997 - 2008. During this time, I learned classical, acoustic, jazz, and rock guitar from three different teachers simultaneously. Additionally, I played as part of a jazz band for 4+ years. Today, I continue to play in a singer-songwriter tradition, performing around the bay area at various open-mic shows.

From 2012 - 2014 I taught English in the Peace Corps in Ukraine. This included extensive teaching of reading, from the elementary to the high school level. I also have experience teaching adults in the USA whose native language was not English.
