I recently finished my PhD in chemistry at USC. My research focuses on characterizing the structure of various inorganic compounds in order to better develop functional materials for energy storage. My graduate research focuses not only on understanding the chemistry of my compounds but also algorithmic modelling we use to understand our data and characterize structure. I graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in chemistry and a minor in math and appreciate how my graduate research allowed me to continue to develop my understanding of both complex math and chemistry!

I come from a long line of teachers as my mother, grandmother, and great grandmother were all educators. As a result throughout my academic career I have always taken a special interest in helping others learn. I began tutoring in high school and continued this practice throughout my undergraduate career into graduate school. Throughout my undergraduate career I not only tutored in both math and general chemistry but also worked as a teaching assistant in both general chemistry and analytical chemistry. In graduate school I continued to teach a subject I am passionate about, analytical chemistry, for which I earned an award for excellence in teaching in spring of 2015, the burg teaching fellowship and award in spring 2018, and the Robert Bau prize in spring 2019. While it was an honor to be recognized not only by my students but also the director the analytical labs, I found the most rewarding aspect of the award to be the opportunity to help my students really grasp analytical chemistry, a tough subject. As a chemistry PhD I hope to someday join educators at the college level and communicate STEM subjects in a way that continues to simplify these challenging topics.

As a student myself I can commiserate with the frustration of not understanding a subject, and the distinct feeling of confusion and anger when my notes do not seem to make sense. I can relate because I have had these feelings myself! As someone who once struggled with both chemistry and math I am familiar with where understanding breaks down and confusion begins. My tutoring method reflects this and generally consists off reteaching the subject and breaking down each important point so students will have the tools the need to confidently tackle the new problems they see on exams. This is accomplished through reviewing notes and topics as well as working through practice problems until my students feel prepared. Because I have taken all of the courses in which I am tutoring I always provide my old notes, exams, and study guides in order to help my students be prepared and remind me of any hints and tricks I used to ace the course!

I am based in Culver City near West LA College and available to meet you at a coffee shop or library nearby as well as USC. Please feel free to contact me about scheduling a tutoring session!

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have both taken and tutored algebra 1 at the high school level. I especially enjoy teaching algebra because it is the foundation of all higher mathematics. I have studied many teaching methods math concepts in order to perfect this and best prepare my students to continue in mathematics to any level.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have both taken and tutored algebra s at the high school level. I especially enjoy teaching algebra because it is the foundation of all higher mathematics. Algebra 2 is especially difficult due to word problems and the nature of the material. When tutoring this subject I focus on practice problems that best help my students to understand the questions being asked.
Calculus,

Calculus

Calculus was my favorite subject because there is always a pattern, once my students understand the pattern they gain the confidence to ace their exams. My first formal teaching experience was teaching calculus recitation and I thoroughly enjoy helping students understand the physical meaning of mathematical expressions used in calculus. Through this and one on one work I have helped many people conquer their fear of calculus and even go on to enjoy their math classes.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

I have been studying chemistry for the past 8 years, starting from honors chemistry in high school into my PhD. I have been teaching this subject for the past 4 years so it is especially important to me. I enjoy teaching chemistry because it gives my students a deeper understanding of the environment around them and a better appreciation for modern technology. When teaching chemistry I go slow and make sure to emphasize important topics and create the foundations that will allow my students to continue to succeed.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I have both taken and tutored precalculus at the high school level. I especially enjoy teaching algebra because it is logical and follows simple physical rules that can be observed. I have studied many teaching methods math concepts in order to perfect this and best prepare my students to continue on to calculus either in high school or college.

Organic Chemistry,

Organic Chemistry

Hi there! I have taken organic chemistry, organic chemistry lab, and advanced carbohydrate chemistry throughout my educational career. I still use organic chemistry, including advanced techniques like NMR and IR, every day to test reactions in my personal research. Learning organic chemistry is like learning a new language so when teaching this I emphasize practice. Every organic chemistry problem is like putting together a sentence, or a word puzzle. Once you understand the pieces it is easy, but when they are still foreign it is a daunting task. I start by making sure my students understand the basics of each reaction, then go on to teaching them the more complicated named reactions (semantics) and finally help them put it all together in a mechanism (the sentence)! Before they realize it organic chemistry is a manageable task and they have the tools they need to ace the course!
