About Greg

Hi, I'm Greg.

I have been teaching writing and critical thinking skills to college and college-bound students since 1997. I have a BA in philosophy from Reed College and a PhD in philosophy from UC, San Diego. I am a philosophy instructor at El Camino College and Rio Hondo College, and I have taught at four different campuses in the Los Angeles Community College District. Previously I spent four years teaching philosophy at UC, San Diego and three years there teaching in the Humanities Writing Program. I have worked as a freelance tutor on and off over the last ten years. I am a published academic author and a fiction writer.

My view is that clear and concise writing is the most important skill of the successful college student and that it is crucial for effective communication in business. I am experienced teaching recursive writing in a variety of subjects and genres and in helping students prepare for tests such as the SAT, ACT, GRE, LSAT, SSAT/ISEE, and TOEFL. I have taught students of all ages, from a variety of backgrounds, and with various learning styles and levels of academic preparation. I am experienced in developing, implementing, and assessing IEPs.

I am skilled at making abstract material concrete and at motivating students to engage with material they may previously have found challenging. I am engaging, funny, and nurturing, as well as diligent, honest, and punctual. I do not waste your time or money.

Let me help you or your child to write and think for success!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have studied the philosophy of logic extensively, and I wrote a dissertation, a book, and a review essay on the history of logic. I have taught introduction to logic and critical thinking/discourse at the college level every semester for the last four years. I am familiar with all the commonly-used logic books and software (e.g., Logic 2010).

My areas of specialization are European philosophy, history of ancient and modern philosophy, and philosophy of logic. My areas of competence include ethics, philosophy of science, and social/political philosophy.

I have extensive training and teaching experience in the humanities and related social sciences, and I spent several years teaching in the Humanities Writing Program at UC, San Diego (Revelle College). I have freelanced as a writing tutor for the last decade. I am a published academic (Heidegger and Logic: The Place of Logos in Being and Time) and a fiction writer.

Exceptional tutor!

Greg is probably the best tutor I have had for any subject. He really makes sure that you fully understand the subject matter on a deep level. In addition, Greg is excellent at breaking down complex questions or problems. What used to seem difficult, Greg has made easy to understand. The confidence that I have in my understanding of the material, increases after every lesson with Greg. I would rec
