For the past fourteen years I've been employed at high school as an instructional assistant, and spent the past two as a math tutor at a local charter school. Each year, I'm assigned 10-15 students with some learning disability and part of my job is to ensure these students complete all their required courses necessary to receive their diplomas. All students must complete three years of math classes and, since math is my specialty, I'll pick one math class each semester (one with 6-8 of my students) and work the class with the regular teacher to ensure that ALL the students pass, though my main focus is on my 6-8 students.
Over the years, I've also learned. Learned the importance of treating students with respect and patience, and the vast majority of my students are very receptive and thankful for the help they've received. Each school day, we have a study period (about 40 minutes) and most days one or two of my math students will come by for some help with their homework or upcoming quiz. I especially enjoy these periods because it allows me to work with these students one-on-one and this sort of time spent becomes very productive, also a bit more casual than regular math class and consequently a bit more fun.
I try to help students not only understand math, but see the beauty in mathematical relationships, a philosophy that has led to better, happier and more successful students over the years, most of whom do NOT like math when they enter high school. I've found that most students (special ed and regular ed) lack the understanding of some basic mathematical concept and, once understood, become much more receptive to learning math and other subjects. Much of being a good math student is having the confidence in your own abilities, something that has lacked in the past.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
For the past 14 years I have been an Instructional Assistant at the high school. Each year I work at least one math class (Algebra, Geometry or Algebra II) and work with the regular teacher to ensure as many students pass as possible. I’ve learned patience, understanding, mastery of subject matter and various teaching methods through these efforts. My other classes are filled with students who have learning disabilities so I also understand the importance of diligence and knowing what works with each student.
