I never expected that my life would turn out this way. As a child I fantasized about having jobs like rock star, movie star, sports star but never teacher. In college I started to tutor with an organization called Educational Talent Search. I took the job because I needed some extra spending money that I could use for Saturday night. I would tutor 4 hours a week at a local high school. That is where I met a student, let's call her Mary. She would come in every tutoring session looking for help in Algebra 2, a class she was failing. Her work ethic impressed me. On several occasions she was the first one in and the last one out. One day, near the end of the semester, she came in and showed me her report card. She had a "A" and Algebra 2 and she thanked me for helping her. I was overwhelmed with the feeling that I made a positive contribution to Mary's life. That feeling changed me forever. Today, I am a substitute teacher and studying to become a credentialed teacher.
I believe that all students have to ability to succeed, regardless of race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, economic status or gender. A teacher must have high expectations for all students. If the teacher expects a student to fail, for whatever reason, then a student will definitely fail. That is why it is so important that teachers give each student a fighting chance. Education is the great equalizer. Nelson Mandela once said "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
