About Jeremy

Greetings, I hope this introduction finds you well. Then again, you're on WyzAnt, so you're probably a bit stressed. No worries, I can help!

Naturally, you may be asking some appropriate questions before pressing that 'request' button. I'll answer these below.

What makes me qualified to tutor you?
I am a Philosopher currently involved in independent scholarship and public discourse, but who also happens to have experience (2 years) teaching philosophy to college undergraduates. Therefore, I am experienced and my philosophic chops are up-to-date, all of which is great for you!

But, Jeremy, what makes you qualified to tutor me in areas outside of philosophy?
Great question! To begin, I hold an undergraduate degree in a subject other than Philosophy, i.e., Sociology. Secondly, the other subjects on my profile are those in which I am qualified to tutor students if and only if I had first successfully demonstrated proficiency via WyzAnt's subject-specific testing in each one. In addition, I need to be proficient in many of these areas in order to do good philosophy on my particular areas of research, i.e., world history.

What about your teaching/tutoring style? Do you regard teaching and tutoring to be identical?
Let's begin by addressing the second question. The answer is that teaching and tutoring, while not disparate from one another, are analogous to each other. That is, one holds similarities to the other, and vice versa, yet they divergent in the same way that classroom teaching is to office hours counsel of the relevant course material. To be sure, office hours is that timeframe in which professors are available to students. This is where I've done a lot of tutoring. And you know what? I enjoy it.

Does this mean you are a patient tutor?
Indeed, I am. I have taught and tutored students with a variety of talents. Typically, as is almost always the case (and I've yet to observe differently), one set of individual talent implies a set of weaknesses in another area, e.g., STEM students usually struggle with the humanities, and humanities students usually struggle with STEM. No problem, I've professionally dealt with each case and more.

All things equal, I do not presume that I've answered every question, comment, or concern. Having said that, I urge you to 'feel free' to email me with anything I may not have considered.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Philosophy

I currently earn a stipend and free tuition in exchange for graduate teaching duties at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK. I trained rigorously in philosophy during my undergrad stints at Brandman and Arizona State universities respectively. As of now, I am in the midst of independently structuring my own course, which will closely tie into my thesis currently under research (a project that has three esteemed philosophers on its committee). Furthermore, I have one full school year under my belt lecturing, grading, administering tests and exams, and providing office hours help to college students (Freshman to Senior).

What is more, feel free if you have any further questions or need any kind of verification of my credentials and/or affiliations.

Sociology

I hold a B.A. in sociology from Brandman University of the Chapman University System. Before committing myself to philosophy, I turned down a funded offer from New Mexico State University to attend graduate school there as a GTA. A paper of mine was selected as a poster to attend the annual Western Philosophical Association in spring 2012 (or 2013) Conference, which was largely a social psychology piece. Finally, I teach my philosophy classes with a predominately social philosophic tone that centers on related sociological matters like imperialism, neocolonialism, inequality, et cetera.

Study Skills

I am a current graduate student who receives a stipend and free tuition in exchange for graduate teaching at Oklahoma State University. I teach 100-level courses, which entails my instruction of study skills during office hours and after class. I have two methods I would like to share with you.

First, I have my students write one page expositions or exegeses (double spaced) on readings I assign. Secondly, I encourage the use of thesauruses, which improves one's ability to rewrite information they adduce from their sources. This practice help avoid 'false positives' on plagiarism detection software as well as over quoting sources. Accordingly, I aim to help students learn the material rather than simply memorizing it.
