About COLIN

As an instructor with 12 years of experience, I know my diverse skills and qualifications will make me an asset to your English learning experience.

I’ve built my teaching career in a variety of roles and locations, from individual tutoring in my clients' homes, to getting my own sets of classes in a foreign country (of which I was a stranger to the culture), to substituting for a new class every day. I’m not only used to change and unpredictability, I sincerely enjoy them; I thrive in an environment where no two work days are exactly the same.

In addition to being flexible and responsive, I’m also a fanatic for details – particularly when it comes to teaching the curriculum. Developing curriculum is something I spent a lot of time doing while I was a private tutor, as each client required very different approaches and content to meet his or her learning style and skill level.

I am as passionate a student as I am a teacher. I am currently enrolled in online classes to further my education, so I am constantly reminded of the challenges that students face, making me an even more unique candidate for the position, as I am not out of touch with those I am instructing. This is especially true of foreign students. As an ESL teacher, I’ve traveled to or lived in 20 different countries, so I know what it’s like to be a foreigner. I think empathy for one’s students is the greatest asset a teacher can possess, and I’m uniquely positioned to give that to my students.

If you have any questions, please feel free to sent me a message. I usually get back to students in no more than a couple hours.

I so look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am a native English speaker with many years of experience as an ESL teacher. Throughout my schooling I excelled in the humanities, including reading, writing, grammar, literature, and many more. I also have ample public speaking experience through the arts as well as debate throughout my academic career.

ESL/ESOL

During the last 12 years of my teaching career, I've spent 2 years living abroad teaching English exclusively. Beyond that, I've traveled to over 30 countries. Whether it's reading, writing, listening, or speaking you need help with, I've spent thousands of hours helping my students perfect that area of English learning.

Grammar

Grammar and writing are among my strongest teaching areas. For four years, I tutored college students in Nashville how to write more clear and concise papers for their research classes. I then continued to drive home these skills while teaching abroad for 2 years in Korea. If grammar and writing are sticking points for you, I will help break down the rules so that don't feel so complicated. In fact, you'll be that annoying friend who corrects everyone else's grammar in no time.

(Can you spot my grammar mistake in the paragraph above?)

Reading

If reading comprehension is your area of weakness, I can help you. Whether it's differentiating between cause and effect within a paragraph, distinguishing the relationship between two sentences, establishing a conclusion based on the evidence presented in a sentence, or determining the intent or point behind an author's writing, I will teach you the methods and tactics you need to quickly arrive at complete comprehension of the writing and excel going forward.

TOEFL

During my time teaching abroad, prepping my students for the TOEFL exam was a major component of the curriculum. Whether you need help with the reading, writing, speaking, or listening sections, I can give you the preparation you need to not only pass the test, but also excel at it.

Vocabulary

If you feel your vocabulary lacks breadth or color, I can give you the tools you need to expand your linguistic palette. Whether it's to improve your ability to express yourself at work and among customers or to strengthen the writing on your website or in your emails, a robust vocabulary is indispensable to success. With my 12 years of teaching experience, 4 of which were spent exclusively consulting with college students on writing stronger research papers, I know my expertise will elevate the quality of your writing to a new zenith.

Writing

If writing is your area of weakness, I can help you become a proficient communicator with the pen and pad. Whether it's organizing your ideas into a coherent flow, making an argument to appeal to the reader, or explaining a difficult or arcane process to a layman, I will teach you the habits and methods you'll need to compose concise and enjoyable writing for all who read it.
