About Elizabeth

Hello! My name is Elizabeth, but I usually go by Eli (E-lee). I am 24 years old, and I love teaching. I like seeing a child tackle a problem and stand back once they are done with a look of accomplishment, and complete satisfaction on their face. I have always loved to learn, and was always encouraged to learn. I am one of four kids. I am close with my family, they have supported me through the interpreting certification program (3 long years!) and have stood by my side as I try to finish getting my AA degree in Liberal Arts (just one semester away!)

I have experience with tutoring. I have taught classes out of my home since I graduated in 2013. I have taught a wide variety of ages, kids as young as 8 up to adults that are 30+, one is never too old to learn! I really love sign language. I taught myself SEE (signing exact English) sign when I was 12 years old, but soon fell in love with ASL (American Standard Language). I entered the interpreting program at Golden West College when I was 17.

I love what I do. I love creating lesson plans and sharing my knowledge of ASL. I love introducing people to a new language and community. I like getting to know people and getting to share something with them that I love. I have had several years of experience, but everyday I learn something new. On a personal level, I own four dogs that I am completely in love with, I have a slight addiction to coffee, and whenever I am not signing or playing with my pups, I can be found with my nose in a book.

My niece was born with the affects of having suffered a stroke in-utero. She cannot use her right side and her speech was delayed. The doctors said she'd never speak BUT with the use of sign language (taught to her by her proud Auntie) my niece not only signs- she TALKS. All the time, it's amazing and wonderful, but sign language gave her a voice- further increasing my passion for it. I also have an older brother that has Asperger syndrome, OCD, and Tourette syndrome. I know what its like to work with and for special needs. I love my older brother, I wouldn't be where I am without him.

Contact me if you have any information! I'm ready and willing to get to know you and answer any questions you may have!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Sign Language

I graduated the Sigh Language Interpreting Program at Golden West College in 2013, and received my certificate from GWC to interpret upon graduation. I graduated with a 3.4 grade average and was one of the top students in my class. Since graduation, I have tutored a number of students in ASL. I have worked with ages from 8-30+ years. I am currently enrolled at Orange Coast College to obtain my AA degree in Liberal Arts, I graduated high school in 2010. I have experience working with special needs children, and I have experience teaching special needs children ASL.
