About Sara

Greetings! My name is Sara and I am a PhD student studying physical chemistry at UC Irvine. I have been tutoring general chemistry for over 5 years and have taught chemistry labs and lectures at the university level for over 3 years. As someone who has earned a B.S. and M.S. in chemistry, I know from first-hand experience that chemistry can be challenging and even frustrating at times, but I'm here to make the learning experience as painless as possible! My approach to tutoring involves helping you break down difficult concepts into simpler terms that can be readily visualized, allowing you to build a solid foundation for the tougher ideas. As a student myself, I am very in touch with the best ways to learn and synthesize new information because I use these skills on a daily basis while working on my PhD. These skills helped me to achieve a "5" on the AP Chemistry exam and maintain a 4.0 GPA while earning my B.S. and M.S. degrees and I want to pass them on to you!

My motivation for tutoring stems from my love of the subject; unfortunately, many people don't share this feeling about chemistry and some downright dislike it. However, I believe that these negative sentiments result more from feeling that the subject matter is inaccessible or intimidating and not necessarily from the material itself, so one of my goals as your tutor is to make chemistry feel as approachable as possible. Many of my students have turned their dislike of the subject into a genuine interest and appreciation, and some have even changed their major to chemistry! While I can't promise that you'll fall in love, I can assure you that my approach to tutoring will help you gain a better understanding of the fundamentals of chemistry.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
