My professional career has revolved around instructing students in chemistry and biology mainly at a liberal arts college in Palos Verdes. While many students say these subjects are hard, I am a firm believer that the difficulty usually stems from the way the subject is taught and a lack of emphasis on the work that must be done to practice concepts. In my teaching I stress that any science is just like a foreign language and must be practiced as such to gain understanding.
I have 2 Master's degrees in biology and biochemistry, which has allowed me to teach a variety of courses over the years. I have been employed mainly as chemistry teacher for a liberal arts college in Palos Verdes for nearly two decades but have also instructed high school biology for summer schools. Most importantly, I was also a private tutor for several years instructing students in the sciences and math. While I absolutely enjoy the classroom interactions as part of my job, I also equally enjoy the one-on-one level instruction tutoring provides. In the past I have worked with the same student over several years as they matured from grade school to college and am grateful for the opportunity be a part of their growing process.
As I live in Costa Mesa and work in Palos Verdes this semester, I am available for tutoring anywhere from the South Bay to Northwestern Orange county region. James was very helpful and knew the material well. He was also very accommodating in fitting me into his schedule. Best chemistry tutor I have had.
James and the time spent with him was very productive.
He has a great manner of teaching which was good to grasp onto the subject matter at hand!!
James is an awesome tutor. I am working with him on biochemistry and he always comes well prepared for each lesson and is timely. He is very thorough and goes into great detail. James is great.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
While much of my formal training involves protein chemistry, I am proficient in understanding the overall common pathways that often trouble students especially glycolysis/oxidative phosphorylation, photosynthesis, replication, transcription/translation, etc. Understanding the overall pathway (and their reactions) and the interdependence in metabolism is key to doing well in any biochemistry course.
While much of my professional experience is in teaching chemistry/biochemistry, I have taught several accelerated high school summer programs in general chemistry and marine biology. While many complain about the level of memorization often associated with biology, my goal is to teach the connectivity of the subject whether it be cellular biology, anatomy/physiology, or ecology. In my experiences, students do not have trouble memorizing facts but connecting them together into an overall understanding.
I have instructed college chemistry for 15 at a liberal arts college in PV. From my teaching and tutoring experiences, I am quite comfortable in most general and organic chemistry topics. This includes being adept at both calculations and theory of measurements, stoichiometry, thermochemsitry, equillibrium, redox, nomenclature and reaction mechanisms.
I have 2 Master's degrees in biology and biochemistry, which have allowed me to teach a variety of courses over the years. Understanding O chem is to treat the subject like any foreign language with rules that must be practiced. This includes the nomenclature of organic families and the mechanisms that synthesize and react them. In addition understanding the physical properties of organic molecules (such as chirality and isomerism) allows for a better understanding of more advanced topics such as biochemistry.
