I am a CA single subject credentialed math teacher. I can teach algebra to calculus. I am also a CPA, so I can teach accounting as well. I am a CA single subject credentialed math teacher. I can teach algebra to calculus. I am also a CPA, so I can teach accounting as well. One of my strengths is preparing students for tests, such as semester mid-terms, finals, SAT, ACT, or CAHSEE. My methodology is emphasizing the math fundamentals to apply in problems solving situations. Certain concepts provide the foundation to each level of math. For example, students in algebra need to know properties of real numbers, linear and quadratic equations, and factoring; in geometry, students need to know the Pythagorean theorem, parallel postulate, trigonometric ratios, and various geometric figures; in calculus, students need knowledge of instantaneous rate of change and integral concepts. When these foundations are weak or skipped, students have to rely on the short term memorization, which will not serve students well in comprehensive exams, e.g., mid-terms, finals, CASHEE, SAT, ACT, etc. The good news is that foundational concepts rarely change, so one has to just understand and place them in the existing math schema in the long term memory, so they can be recalled and utilized in solving problems. Identifying the students' weaknesses in foundation and correcting them are crucial. Then, following up with a systematic and timely review is the way way to math mastery and success. In my opinion, the most important assets students possess are: curiosity, good daily studying habits, and confidence. My job as a math tutor is to help them acquire these traits. This approach ensures a long term success. Quick fixes and shortcuts do not work in math education.
