Grambling State University (Music)
My Name Is De-Montae and I have been engrossed in music since my first piano lesson in 1992. In Middle school I learned to play the saxophone and that only intensified my love for music. I began playing professionally by the time I was in high school, performing with the likes of George Clinton, Herbie Hancock and I even attended the celebrity golf tournament in Pebble beach California in 2008 with a small jazz combo. After high school many of my class mates pursued a life of performing but I preferred the thrill of teaching.
After High school I landed a part time job teaching music at an after school program. I loved it so much that I decided to go to college to study to be a full time music instructor. During my college years I gave private lessons and performed small gigs to earn money. My skills in music afforded me the ability to make a living without conflicting with my school schedule and I was able to empower many of my students to do the same.
I have played in church for many years and have had to rely on my ear so much that I have an adept sense of pitch recognition. This skill -coupled with my applied understanding of music theory-is the best medium for learning to read, and becoming skilled in areas that usually only come with years of experience.
Please feel free to contact me; any time is a good time! I encourage you not to delay in order to be sure to schedule a lesson that accommodates both your schedule and mines. The lessons will be geared around goals you want to achieve. and I love working with musicians of ALL ages. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I received my bachelors in music from Grambling State University. While there I had to take theory and ear training and I applied that knowledge with my experience from playing in church. I'm prepared to create listening tests as well as rhythmic and music dictation.
While enrolled in grambling I took and passed all of my theory classes. I have access to a basic theory book that includes things from intervals, to cadences etc. I completed courses in woodwind methods, percussion methods, string methods and brass-wind methods.
I have been playing piano for a total of 9 years. I access to basic, intermediate and advanced books for teaching music. I have read piano charts while in high school and in college. I am able to provide techniques for piano students of all ages.
I have played saxophone for close to 15 years. While in college I studied under the music chair and department head at Grambling State University. I successfully completed the requirements needed to obtain my bachelors in music with a concentration in saxophone.
During my time as a student in Grambling State University I took vocal pedagogy classes one and two. Along with my formal instruction I have taught church choirs and held positions as minister of music where I was required to prepare three or four to perform on Sunday. I have also had the privilege to coach one of students and they received call backs for the national talent search tv shown known as "The Voice."
