About Carol

I love working individually with elementary students in order to improve their abilities and develop confidence. I have enjoyed teaching various grades, K-6 in the classroom in public and private schools. Most recently, I worked as an independent study teacher at a charter school for grades K-12. As part of this program, I taught small group classes in Reading, Math, & Art to K-8 grade students During this time, I also worked as a private tutor, serving hundreds of students.

Tutoring provides the personal attention the classroom is unable provide. Instruction is designed to supplement and reinforce what is being taught in the classroom, and tutoring sessions provide a challenge while not overwhelming your child. Your child will learn achievement is possible! Better grades at school, a new self-confidence, and desire to learn will result. I enjoy working closely with students and parents to build a rapport and therefore obtain the best results.

In addition to working as a classroom teacher and small group instructor,I have worked at a Reading Achievement Center, in which phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension abilities are determined using a diagnostic/prescriptive approach. Activities and exercises are individually assigned and completed, and assessments made on an ongoing basis to ensure progress.

I have worked with K-6th graders in the classroom as well as individually. I specialize in teaching younger readers who are challenged with beginning Reading/Writing skills or Mathematics by giving an assessment during the first session to determine areas of strength and weakness. Based on the results and parental input, I then develop an individual plan for success. I may use hands-on activities or art activities to enrich each lesson. Tutoring individually provides the fastest results, so I favor this type of teaching!

I have successfully taught phonics using a variety of methods and materials, depending on the needs, abilities, and interests of the individual student. Based on observations or If requested, I offer tutoring services using a specific program for students with Dyslexia.

What is more important to your child's future than his or her education? I am happy to offer in-home tutoring services to those in Roseville, Auburn, Grass Valley, and Colfax areas. Give your child a better start for a successful future by contacting me today--let's get started!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a credentialed teacher, I have many years of experience teaching K-6th math in public and private school classrooms, in small groups at resource centers, as well as private tutoring one-on-one. An assessment of a student's abilities taken at our first meeting determines what we will begin to work on. Depending on the age of the student, I enjoy incorporating hands-on activities whenever possible, prior to teaching paper-and- pencil math exercises.

Phonics

As a credentialed Elementary Teacher, I have had many years of experience teaching phonics in the classroom, small group instruction, and one-on-one tutoring in public and private schools. I use a variety of materials to make learning phonics a lively experience. I have also been trained to teach reading using a specific program for students with Dyslexia, which is a phonics based method.
