About John

I am an experienced teacher having taught English at the high school level for over 10 years. I work at a college prep school and the majority of our students (97%) go on to college careers. I have graded essays for SAT/ACT courses over the years, and enjoy working with students on the writing process.

Before teaching at the high school level, I began my career teaching K-8 for five years and believe I have a well-rounded background. I am enthusiastic, patient and knowledgeable. I enjoy seeing my students progress as writers and as people. I believe in positive reinforcement I love to watch my students succeed!

I will help you reach your full potential as a writer and as a student. 96% of the students I have taught over the past 16 years have gone onto college careers. Let me help you be the next!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I am an experienced high school English teacher who in years past have worked with many of our international students who were mainstreamed into my classes.
I have tutored many of these students before and after school. While working in the middle school, almost half of my students were ESL.

Fitness

I am currently a Physical Education teacher at a high school. Over the past 17 years I have been a varsity coach on campus. I teach health as well and use various apps. in my teaching. I have trained athletes who have gone on to be professionals and have personally trained with weights for the past 25 years. I am experienced in Pilates and believe flexibility is a main ingredient for an athlete to perform at his or her top level.

Football

I have coached football at the high school level for over 20 years. I have primarily been a defensive coach and coordinator during this time. In 2014 I was awarded the Gib Dear Award given for top assistant coach of the year in CIF. It is an award that is voted on by all of the Southern California coaches and was presented to me by the Southern California Football Coaches Association.
I have coached on Championship teams and have seen many of my players go on to play at the college level, and a few play professional football in the NFL and Arena Football

Reading

I have been an English Teacher for over ten years. During this time my classes have centered primarily around short story and novel reading. The ability to comprehend and think about what has been read has been a big part of my classes grade. I consider myself to be an avid reader and try to read one book/novel each week.

SAT Writing

For over ten years I have taught American Literature (11th grade) and World Literature(12th grade). Included in my class has been work out of the SAT prep book. Once we began teaching SAT prep courses after school, I was involved in some instruction and was a grader for the students essays.

Vocabulary

I have taught third grade for three years and American Literature (11th) for over ten years. At both levels vocabulary terms were reviewed, tested and used in a writing structure (Daily Oral Language 3rd grade, sentences and paragraph writing at the high school level) on a daily basis in all of my classes.

Writing

As an English teacher for over ten years working primarily with Juniors and Seniors, the writing process is a huge part of there curriculum. I have experience in all four types of writing, although my emphasis is in persuasive writing. I have been an essay grader for over eight years for SAT prep courses and consider myself to be a polished writer. My students when completing my course all know how to write clear and concise three part essays.
