About Caleb

"Reading is the work of an alert mind," according to E.B. White, "and under ideal conditions produces finally a sort of ecstasy." Ecstatic reading? That sounds pretty good. Ideal conditions? Those sound nice, too. Maybe a roomy chair by a roaring fire. But wait! You've got an essay due. You don't have time to build a fire. That's where I come in.

You already have an alert mind. Trust me. But I also know that sometimes doing your English homework is about as thrilling as counting the age rings of a redwood tree. Here's something to remember: Writers are just looking for someone to talk to. When you pick up a book, you're striking up a conversation. But it's a conversation with your smartest friend, someone who's full of wise observations, stories, jokes and ideas. Sure, some books are more intimidating than others. But no good writer is only out to stump you. I believe any student — with the help of a skilled tutor — can learn to engage confidently with any book, and produce writing that is bright and well-made.

I have an honors degree in English from a college with major writing bona fides. (My alma mater has produced Pulitzer Prize-, National Book Award-, and Oscar-winning scribes.) So I know how to pilot the way to perceptive reading. I also know a few things about writing clearly. National magazines have published my prose. And at present, I'm helping a New York Times-bestselling author with his next book.

Mark Twain remarked that a big book is the "finest thing in the world to throw at a noisy cat." Together, I think we can prove him wrong. That big book just might be worth reading first.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

In addition to taking both intro and advanced level Anthropology courses in college, I also completed a multi-year independent study with a professor of anthropology, wherein we completed an ethnographic film. That experience gave me incomparable insight into the field.

Literature

I have a B.A., with honors, in English literature.
