About Kathryn

I studied music education and English at Luther College in Decorah, IA and will begin my Master's at UCLA in the fall. I have studied classical and improvisational teaching techniques, and am committed to an holistic approach to teaching. I bring together theory, anatomy, and musical expression and make it accessible to students of all ages. My students currently perform in the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus and have won several local talent competitions. Whatever your background or previous experience, I will meet you where you are and help you get to the next level and beyond.

During my English studies, I focused on writing and literature. I have tutored students of all ages in reading, writing, test preparation, and college applications. I use a variety of structured activities that are designed to help each individual student reach his/her goals.

I specialize in voice and piano and have a strong background in music theory, ear training, and sight singing. My English background is in writing, medieval literature, and classics.

I tailor my lesson plans to each individual student. During your first lesson, we'll talk about what what your goals are, and what you want to get out of your studies. I'll then create a curriculum specially designed for you that we will use in lessons.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I was an unofficial ear training tutor in college. I was at the top of my class for all four semesters of my studies. The professor would often have me do dictation in front of the class so that other students could benefit from my method. I am now a professional transcriber and engraver for composers.

English

I studied English in college, graduating magna cum laude. I specialized in writing and medieval literature, and have tutored students of all ages in reading, writing, and test preparation.

Handwriting

As a teacher, it has come to my attention that schools no longer educate children in how to properly hold a pen or pencil, let alone handwriting. Teaching piano has given me an intimate knowledge of the anatomy of the hand, the fingers, and how they work to the best advantage. When I have my students practice manuscript writing, they first must learn how to hold and control the implement. I know several hand exercises that help with such control and apply it to handwriting.

Piano

I have been playing piano for over 20 years. I currently teach privately and through the Claremont Community School of Music in Claremont, CA. I started working as a professional accompanist when I was 17 and I passed piano proficiency in my first semester of college.

Sight Singing

I never missed a point on my sight-singing exams in college. I now work as a professional choral and solo singer. I passed the sight-singing professional exams for Long Beach Camerata Singers and Pacific Chorale.

Voice (Music)

I have been singing and performing since the age of 5. I was a voice major at Luther College for my BA, where I graduated magna cum laude. I will start my MM in Voice at UCLA in the fall. I currently teach voice in my own studio, at a music academy and at the Claremont Community School of Music.
