About John

I am an accounting professional with over 25 years experience in the profession. I graduated summa cum laude with a 4.0 GPA in accounting. I am a licensed CPA and certified CGMA. During my career, mostly as a controller, I have built several accounting departments from the ground up and have mentored many entry level staff accountants. In fact, I have mentored entry level staff accountants so well that they became my successor when I left the company.

I have led staffs as small as 5 people to as large as 15. I foster an atmosphere enabling people to learn and grow. I have had several employees follow me from one company to another because of the mentoring style and learning environment I provide. I enjoy setting people up for success. I believe the skills I have for mentoring a staff translates well to tutoring accounting.

I was a trainer for a software developer. In this capacity I provided training both on site at the client and in a classroom setting at our home office. This experience will also translate well to tutoring students one on one.

I am an extensive user of Excel including the use of many advanced formulas, macros and linking. As part of my CPE requirements to keep my CPA license current I have taken many Excel courses through CalCPA. In my capacity as a controller I have taken the time to create workshops to help employees at our remote locations strengthen their Excel skills. This proved to be a benefit to them as well as my staff as it reduced errors and provided a climate where it made it easy for people to ask questions when they did not know how to do something in Excel or encountered errors in workbooks.

In my capacity as a Controller I am a trusted adviser to the Board of Directors and Owners. I have worked in several industries including but not limited to recreational sports, food & beverage, retail and wholesale distribution. I am skilled at cash management, budgeting.

I have been a hands on, roll up my sleeves leader with an in depth knowledge of A/R, A/P, Data Entry as well as inventory management. I have experience with implementation of accounting software.

I have extensive experience auditing companies as well as being the liaison for companies being audited. One of my strengths is reviewing and improving the accounting policies and procedures and in doing so improving the efficiency of the accounting department.

I am generally available in the evenings and on Saturdays. I over one free consultation meeting to discuss your needs and how I might meet them. I require 24 hours notice to cancel a tutoring session.

I look forward to hearing from you to discuss further my qualifications, your need and my ability to set you up for success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

In my capacity as a controller I have extensive business experience. In this capacity I am a trusted adviser to the owners and board of directors. I mentor entry level accountants and help them make the shift from book knowledge to real world experience.

Previous to my accounting career I spent some time in retail. My store became a training store for the chain due my ability to produce more manager trainees and managers than any other. I was chosen to work with other store managers to improve their procedures involving inventory management and taking physical inventories.

I also worked with the other managers on best business practices such as displaying and promoting merchandise.
