I like to informally assess the skills of people that I am working with by listening them to read, asking them questions about what they read, and asking them what they think are their difficulties. I encourage them to read the words in their head because this is how fluent readers read, allowing greater comprehension of what is read. I also like to have a writing sample to see what level the people I tutor are currently functioning at.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I took classes through National University and earned a Preliminary Level 1 Resource Specialist Credential. After that I worked as a Special Education Resource Teacher in the CA Public Schools for 7 years working with elementary age students. In this position I worked with many students who were diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, exhibiting behaviors such as not being able to sit still, difficulty listening, impulsivity, not being able to focus, being overactive, not being able to control behavior, or a combination of these.
Through small group or individual instruction, I was able to help these students progress in their studies using a variety of approaches that helped them to focus and control the behaviors that were interfering with their learning.
