I am currently retired from the space industry after 34 years with the Department of Defense. I worked at the Space and Missile Systems Center as a Senior Systems Engineer. I worked with civilian contractors overseeing their design and development of various types of satellites that are used by the military. My duties required me to have a strong background in Mathematics and Physics in order to make sure that the contractor was properly following specifications and standards as outlined by the Air Force Space Command.
I also am a retired Colonel from the Air Force Reserves and have extensive experience in supervising all types of personnel. I am very detail oriented and thorough in explaining and outlining approaches to solving problems. I believe in getting immersed in a subject by doing a lot of examples and covering all steps in a solution. I still attend classes as an auditor at the Harvey Mudd Engineering College in areas such as Theoretical Mechanics and Quantum Chemistry. So I am still proficient in both the elementary and advanced levels of Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus and Differential Equations. I solve problems in these subjects as a means of mental exercising and staying proficient in the latest developments relating to the various computer tools for solving very difficult problems.
I know what it is like to be a student and how frustrating solving math and physics problems can be. I would help a student to become more confident in learning the subjects since I have been there and done that.
Tom has provided examples of their subject expertise by answering 196 questions submitted by students on Wyzant’s Ask an Expert.
Knowledgeable and patient
Tom is very patient. He also goes above and beyond when there is a question that stumps him, he seeks out answers outside of tutoring time. Genuinely wants to help the student!Peggy, 1 lesson with Tom
very knowledgeable and always making sure he's 100% sure of the answer
Its one thing to get the answer to a problem but to understand how you got there is what's more important, Tom does a great job of explaining step by step how to solve a problem and makes sure you understand it. He is very knowledgeable and a great tutorNoah, 15 lessons with Tom
Excellent tutor, exteremly knowledgeable
Had a great first lesson with Tom. Broke down a complicated subject, had thorough explanations, and maintained a good pace. We were done with the material I wanted to go over 20 minutes early, so we went ahead to material I didn't think I'd get to go over. Highly recommend him!Mark, 1 lesson with Tom
Patient, Pleasant, and Productive
Tom truly clarified concepts in 10th grade geometry for my daughter; he reviewed and retaught algebraic concepts so that she was able to pass the course with a B grade after being told by her teacher at the end of the first trimester that her success in the course did not look promising. She will continue to review with Tom over the summer so that she is prepared for 11th grade integrated math. Thanks a million, Tom!Mike, 23 lessons with Tom
great physics tutor
He has been helping me with my general physics college courses, and it has been really helpful. I send him some problems I want to go over before the tutor session that he will work out before we meet. During the meeting, he will explain the solution step by step until I understand it. He is very familiar with the book that I use in my class and knows exactly where to look for the correct equations, and will explain why those equations are needed for specific problems as well. He is very patient and helpful whenever I am still confused and will keep going over the problem until it makes sense to me. When there is extra time in the session, he also presents some extra examples to help me understand as well, in case a similar problem shows up on a quiz or exam.Mildred, 14 lessons with Tom
Patient & knowledgeable
Very patient and explains in different ways to get the message across. My son stays after school to get help from his calculus teacher at least three days a week but he doesn’t get as much out of it as with TomKarine, 28 lessons with Tom
Tom is so smart and patient. He explains things well. I was able to keep up with him. I feel more confident with Pre Calculus and will continue to book sessions with him.Chris, 2 lessons with Tom
Helpful With Vector Statics
Tom is so helpful and really knows his mathematics!! Meeting up with him has really helped and strength my understanding on the subject!! This is my second class I meet up with Tom and will definetly continue to seek him out on my future engineering courses. Thanks a lot Tom!Judy, 5 lessons with Tom
He has helped my son raise his geometry grade from a B+ to an A-. He helped find my son's knowledge gaps and fill them in. He has been flexible with our ever-changing schedule.Danielle, 4 lessons with Tom
Great tutor for the tough classes
Tom works to address his student's needs. We appreciate his support every meeting. He is also able to meet in various locations around the school area, and responds to requests even a few days before finals, if he can.Mary, 10 lessons with Tom
