I am currently retired from the space industry after 34 years with the Department of Defense. I worked at the Space and Missile Systems Center as a Senior Systems Engineer. I worked with civilian contractors overseeing their design and development of various types of satellites that are used by the military. My duties required me to have a strong background in Mathematics and Physics in order to make sure that the contractor was properly following specifications and standards as outlined by the Air Force Space Command.
I also am a retired Colonel from the Air Force Reserves and have extensive experience in supervising all types of personnel. I am very detail oriented and thorough in explaining and outlining approaches to solving problems. I believe in getting immersed in a subject by doing a lot of examples and covering all steps in a solution. I still attend classes as an auditor at the Harvey Mudd Engineering College in areas such as Theoretical Mechanics and Quantum Chemistry. So I am still proficient in both the elementary and advanced levels of Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus and Differential Equations. I solve problems in these subjects as a means of mental exercising and staying proficient in the latest developments relating to the various computer tools for solving very difficult problems.
I know what it is like to be a student and how frustrating solving math and physics problems can be. I would help a student to become more confident in learning the subjects since I have been there and done that. Tom is great! Today we went over some problems I was having trouble with in my physics class. He did the problem himself before we met up and showed me step by step how to do it.
Extremely knowledgeable and explains things in detail but simplified for ease of understanding. He is a patient instructor with a working knowledge of the math my student requires.
We went over worksheets given by my teacher to help me with and exam. He was able to help me with all of my questions. I feel better prepared for my exam than before our lesson. Thank you Tom!
My son was ill and missed several weeks of school. Tom helped him complete assignments he missed during his absence. Tom was very thorough about explaining the process of solving equations. He went through each step of the problems and made sure my son understood how to solve the problems on his own. We will be using Tom again.
Mr. Tom helped my nephew with his calculus which his Teacher didn't teach well and he was struggling. Mr.Tom responded right away compare to other tutors for the tutor request even though it was the last minute urgent help request. Now my nephew is more clear by him clarifying the problems. Tom was very flexible and accommodating to schedule a lesson at such short notice. He was patient while going over AP Calculus problems. Tom was open to questions I had about the problems. I would recommend Tom as a tutor.
Today we reviewed several topics including, energy, power, work, and the ideal gas law. The tutor provided helpful study questions to aid with my preparation for my midterm. He guided me through the questions and clarified any extra questions that I had, pertaining to the material. Great tutor!

This is our first experience using a tutor and we can't be happier. Our son needed help with Algebra 2, so we read the profiles of various tutors and our son chose Tom. I can't say enough good things about Tom. He is very professional, polite, punctual and most importantly, he knows how to teach. He is a very patient man and went above and beyond to make sure that our son understood the material. Our son received a D in the first half of Algebra 2. I'm retaking physics over the summer after previously struggling with the subject. Tom is an excellent tutor with a thorough understanding of physics and the related mathematics. He knows the formulas by heart and has participated in real world application of these concepts, yet is still patient and understanding in explaining them to a student like me who displays no affinity for the subject and little inclination to do more than the bare minimum required for the class. He has managed to demonstrate the value of learning this material to me as a computer science major.
He is easily contactable and replies quickly to calls, texts or emails and is more tech savvy and spry than anyone his age I have ever met. I highly recommend Tom as a tutor for anyone, especially those interested in pursuing a career in the engineering field. The only thing which could be construed as a downside to working with him is he has little tolerance for tomfoolery or shenanigans, which means the majority of our time together is spent productively.
Knows Calculus and Physics very well. Easy to understand and work with. Makes a positive difference in terms of grades and productivity. Well worth the expense.

My first meeting with Tom was wonderful. I had a set of precalculus problems and he not only helped me with my work but made me understand the concepts needed for me to finish the work on my own. I would recommend Tom as a tutor and would continue working with him.

We met Mr. N for the first time and my son enjoyed working with him on calculus. He was able to review techniques, and help him understand how to solve his homework problems. I'm hoping that Mr. N can continue to work with my son in AP Calulus AB.
Tom has been working with my son on pre-calculus. He has proven to be courteous, prompt, professional and patient. He does an excellent job of explaining each process and has helpful "hints" for remembering formulas, etc. On his own time he has created review exercises to assess whether or not knowledge has been retained from previous sessions. Our son now has a more positive outlook about pre-calculus.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a strong background in calculus due to profession as an electrical engineer and the fact that I hold two Master's degrees one of which is in Geophysics and the other is in electrical engineering. Both of these career fields required a strong grasp of calculus, differential equations and physics. Also I have been tutoring students who have taken AP calculus at the AB and BC level. The minimum score by any of them was a 4 and this person bypassed the AB exam and took the BC exam. All of the other scores were 5 s.
In the 23 years that I worked for the Department of the Air Force a majority of it was spent on working on projects that involved pointing and tracking systems that would eventually be used for weapons in space. The work that I did as the lead control systems engineer on each involved having to develop advanced feedback loops that accurately pointed at a target and minimized jitter. To do this required the use of second order differential equations and Laplace transforms. I also was involved in developing an advanced navigation filter based on Kalman filter theory for use in an advanced fighter/bomber for the Navy at China Lake. This necessitated the use of Fourier transform theory and partial differential equations. This filter is currently being used in the A6E aircraft.
In my last few years with the Department of the Air Force I spent my technical time looking at radiation effects on materials in space on a satellite. This required good working of Electrodynamics specifically Maxwell's equations and electric circuit theory which requires the use of differential equations and a good working knowledge of Bessel functions and spherical harmonics. I am a co-holder of two patents that deal with the effects of electrostatic discharge effects on materials and the prevention of this type of phenomenon. I hold a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering as a credential.
I am qualified to tutor subjects in electrical engineering since I have a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California. My course work covered control systems, power systems,transform theory, and circuit analysis both direct current and alternating current. I also spent the last ten years of my employment with the Department of the Air Force as a senior systems engineer in the spacecraft power section overseeing the development and implementation of power systems such as solar cells, batteries,and flywheels into military satellite systems.
As to my background and credentials in this area I spent 23 years working for the Department of the Air Force overseeing the design and testing of feedback and control systems that were used in programs such as Talon Gold which was a pointing and tracking laser weapon for use in space. When SDI came into existence this program was changed to a new program called Pathfinder but with the same mission. These programs required the knowledge and use of state space and linear system principles which are based on a major use of linear algebra and differential equations to assure system stability. I have also worked in space radiation effects on materials and am a co-holder of two patents on Electrostatic Discharge effects as to their root cause and prevention. The credential that I hold is a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
