About Peter

My name is Pete and am in the process of working my way into the teaching profession. My academic disciplines are in Film, Photography, and History. I have made or crewed on over fifteen short films, commercials or music videos. I have worked as a photojournalist and photo editor in New York City and have photographed many weddings and events. I have a love of learning, for learning's sake and thoroughly enjoy passing that love on to others. One of my passions is working with at-risk youth and I spent several years mentoring young men in the Bed-Sty section of Brooklyn, NY who's parent(s) are serving prison time.

My historical areas of interest are in American History, Christian Church History, Military History and European History.

I hold top-tier academic credentials and served as a Teaching Assistant in graduate school in Cinematography, Film Directing and Film/TV Casting classes. I have references from the professors that I worked with available on request. I am also a U.S. Army Veteran having served in the 1st Battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment. My current endeavors include being in the pre-production phase of my first feature length documentary film that will document the story of the upcoming Sacramento mayoral race, and wrapping up a feature length fiction film screenplay that tells the story of the struggles of a returning Iraq War Veteran.

I have made or crewed on over fifteen short films, commercials or music videos. I have worked as a photojournalist and photo editor in New York City and have photographed many weddings and events. Perhaps the most interesting thing that I have done, at least to me, was working as a camera operator for an independent production company in New York City that was making a film about the WWII Marine Corps' Navajo Code Talkers. These men were Native Americans whose unique Navajo language enabled American Forces in the South Pacific to communicate without fear of the Japanese breaking their code. Spending two days with these gentlemen and American Heroes was a life highlight for me as they are now, sadly but inevitably, reaching the ends of their lives. Being able to spend some time with them and help tell their story was super exciting for me as both an American and a Veteran.

My Master's degree is in the disciplines of both Documentary Film and History, but history is my first academic love and I am a lifelong student of historical events and characters. In fact my film studies and research are based on the desire to be able to tell the stories of past events and people in the best way possible. While some may consider filmmaking to be a very "technical" and "easy" discipline, this is most certainly not so. There is much to filmmaking that requires as much of a creative mind as that of the painter, sculptor or writer, as well as the high-level aptitudes of the historian to make both documentary and fiction films pleasing to the viewer with the most educated and critical eye. Outside of my historical areas of interest, I feel that I can aid students in the ways of HOW history can be studied. There are research modes that look at events and people from both "above" and "below" as well as using current oral history to document recent events for the benefit of future generations of learners. When a student is exposed to these different modes of historical study, I feel that it makes the learning of history and historical research that much more enjoyable.

If you are in the need of a tutor in any of my disciplines, I highly recommend contacting me to discuss our compatibility in further detail. I relate well to students of all ages and backgrounds and have a way to convey passion to areas of study that some students have found to be mundane or pedestrian in the past. I have a very diverse and colorful life story that I have found helpful in reaching students of a like personality. I have academic references available on request. Thank you for your consideration!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
