About Michael

My value as a tutor derives from my passion for language. A 2012 Classics graduate with High Honors at UC Davis, I completed an ambitious program of Attic and Koine Greek, Modern German, and Classical and Medieval Latin, winning several Departmental Prizes and placing 2nd in 2011 for Latin translation in the national Eta Sigma Phi contest.
These studies have lent results: twice I had essays published in Nota Bene, the Journal of Classical Studies at UCD, and once I received a poetry prize in the 2012 Ina Coolbrith Memorial. Since graduation, I've passed the CSET English Examination and obtained the CA Single Subject Latin Teaching Credential at CSU Long Beach. I'm currently the Secondary Latin teacher at John Adams Academy in Roseville CA. In a word, I love the trusty old bridges of teaching and tutoring, sharing the wonders which others have shared with me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Greek

I am qualified to tutor Greek because I completed 27 units in the language at UC Davis from 2010 to 2012. Although I have not formally tutored or taught Greek, I have continued to study the language independently, both for its complement to the Latin in which I've gained a CA Teaching Credential, and for its access to original New Testament, which fills my heart and informs my faith.
Although I would recuse myself from tutoring an advanced student, to the novice and intermediate my careful and organized study of Greek grammar would lend direction and success.
