About SHARYNNE

Hello Prospective Students and Parents,

I am a graduate of Sacramento State University with a Bachelors in Bio-medical Science with a concentration in Neurophysiology. Having already transferred with an Associates in Biology, I have extensive knowledge and foundations in the sciences. In addition, my background includes extensive tutoring of students with disabilities both behavioral and academic ranging from Pre-K through college level. My background of subjects range from elementary though college level history, sociology and biology classes. I also specialize in study skills and memorization techniques.

My methods included the use of visual aids such as whiteboards, and study cards for visual learners, in addition to concept mapping, and concept drawings. I also utilize repetition in learning new skills in subject matters of mathematics, English, science and more.

The areas of behavioral and academic disabilities I specialize in are: ADD/ADHD, dyslexia and certain types of autism to name a few.
Area's of specialization are: homework completion, motivation, oppositional defiance in classroom, behavioral coaching and role reversal to aid in a subjects competence.

Outside of school I participate in non-profit organizations such as AMSA and MOSS. In addition to volunteering at a local children's trauma hospital.

I provide a stress free environment and patience that allows all students to
learn new concepts at a pace that allows retention presently and past the classroom.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked with students from elementary through high school who have IEP (Individualized Educational Plans) to assist with study skills, concentration, behavior management. I've joined with teachers and parents in showing techniques aiding in managing a students behavior while in class and at home. In addition to techniques in getting homework completion and motivation.

I have attended and received certification in seminars and training sessions, specializing in techniques to handle ADD/ADHD children.

In addition I regularly attend seminars on new studies and information relating to the field of ADD/ADHD relating to children and it's impact on learning.

Anthropology

I have completed courses in Introduction to Anthropology and Cultural Anthropology. In addition to background courses of Biology and Sociology which provided fundamental principles in aiding the understanding Anthropology as a subject matter and as a Science.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have six years' experience working with students ranging from K-6th in various subject matter. In addition to building solid study skills such as time management, the use of flash cards to aid in memorization, comprehension of literature read. I also build a solid foundation of core subjects such as phonics, math skills and reading skills to assist with advancement of their current grade level.

Elementary Science

My experience ranges from working with elementary students from K-Junior high in basic sciences such as biology, plant biology, earth science, physical science and chemistry.

Knowledge based on grades K-College level understanding of concepts relating to Chemistry, Physics and Biology.

I have completed two college level English courses with a minimum requirement of 6500 words each semester, where presentations and group work where an integral part of the classes. In addition to taking a public speaking and group communication class where the focus was solely on how to communicate in groups and in front of people in a professional manner. With techniques on how to dissolve conflict and present in a cohesive manner as a group and individually.

Reading

My experience ranges from basic comprehension of material to how to read and analyze for a paper. The levels I've worked with range from elementary through college level coursework.

Sociology

I have completed courses at college level in Sociology including: general, Minorities in America, Woman in Society and International Relations in the Social Science field. In addition to courses at University including Sociology of the Middle East. I have additional experience in cultural diversity being involved in clubs such as Future Black Doctors of America and volunteer experience involved with children from disadvantaged background and that are considered high risk.

Special Needs

My experience ranges from elementary through college level students with needs such as ADHD, dyslexia and physical needs such as wheelchairs being deaf and blind. Some of the tools I use to assist these students are recording books on recorders, visual displays, repetition and basic games to increase general understanding of a subject area.

Study Skills

I have been tutoring people with disabilities both physical and non physical for students of college level in all courses developing individualized plans to help them pass their classes improve their study skills. In addition to working with students from elementary through high school with behavior problems in career planning, study techniques, homework help and as a mentor. In addition to having taken study skills specifically for science majors learning techniques such as how to take Cornell style notes, concept graphs, flash cards to aid in memorization and how to translate book information into useful key words to aid in understanding of material.
