About Edward

Hello,

My name is George.

Born in Jacksonville, Florida, I was a Navy brat moving from one state to another since I was 19. Finally settling down in Southern California, I started honing my craft on on all styles of the guitar, with various teachers and college music courses.

After many years of playing gigs with various professional musicians,(once including drummer Bill Lordan of Sly and the Family Stone, James Brown, Robin Trower (and Bill even jammed with Jimi Hendrix).. and another top performer, recording engineer, and musician extrodinaire, Billy Krodel, who worked with the likes of Elton John, Ace Frehley (from KISS),Pat Travers, etc.

I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Economics and Business Administration, at Chapman University in Orange,CA and I earned my Associate's Degree in Liberal Arts at Taft College, in Taft,CA. Currently, I am a professional guitarist, musician, and composer and currently have two bands, as well as performing solo guitar. In 2006, I produced my first CD, entitled "Harlequin", that includes a variety of different styles of music, like Classical, Smooth Jazz, Blues, etc. I have been doing quite well with this CD and I'm in the process of recording more CD's that will be completed by the middle of the this year, 2009.

I love tutoring K1 through K4, English, spelling, reading, reading comprehension, writing, study skills, music, and of course guitar.Currently,I am tutoring part time relating to the NCLB or "No Child Left Behind" Program and have three students, who are doing really well! My other experience as a teacher comes from teaching my nephews; reading, writing, spelling, study skills, guitar and even surfing! While being involved in the Big Brothers program in Orange, CA, I had a little brother assigned to me, that I helped with his homework and study skills for three years. Finally, I taught bible studies for two years, at the Mesa Verde Methodist Church's Junior High Academy.

Most of my professional experience,(that is, what I did to make a living), was in the profession of financial and field claims auditor, with several HMO's (Health Maintenance Organizations), as well as, an Employee Benefit Consulting firm for three years based in Newport Beach, CA.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

General Music

I started my musical studies when I was thirteen. Living in the 1960's, in Newport,Rhode Island, my fascination started with all of the types of musical festivals that they had there. There was a Jazz Festival,Pop Festival, and Folk Festival.
Since I had a friend that already played many instruments,he told me that he was interested in starting a band. So, I asked me mother if she would pay half for a guitar, and she did.. After I bought my first 1952 Fender Esquire electric guitar, I remember going over to my friend's house nearly every day to rehearse. At first, he taught me how to play mostly chords, some simple rhythms and some music theory. After a couple months, I started getting better and I asked my mother if I could take some guitar lessons, so that I would get better faster, and she agreed.

After I had taken about ten lessons, my friend and I talked to a drummer friend and a Bass guitar friend, and thus, our first group "Nyte Trayne" was born.. We were not only received well by our friends, but they loved the types of music we played, and most of them came to our gigs to listen to a mixture of rock and roll, soul, and blues. We were together for almost two years, making money doing gigs throughout the Rhode Island area. Being a Navy brat, moving around for me was the rule,so off it was again to Pensacola, Florida. I took as many lessons and theory classes as I could, from private teachers or schools, whenever and wherever I moved to.

Finally settling down in Southern California at nineteen years old, I started honing my craft on on all styles of the guitar, with various teachers and college music courses.
After many years of playing gigs with various professional musicians,(once including drummer Bill Lordan of Sly and the Family Stone, James Brown, Robin Trower and Bill even jammed with Jimi Hendrix.. and another top performer, recording engineer, and musician extrodinaire, Billy Krodel, who worked with the likes of Elton John, Ace Frehley, Pat Travers, and more and (who plays keyboards on two songs on my CD). I decided to work on a CD that would appeal to a cross section of all ages and ethinic origins. Thus, my first CD "Harlequin" was born...Harlequin is available on CDBaby.COM

Today, I work with a Smooth Jazz Band, a Pop, Blues, Soft Rock Band, and continue to do solo Classical guitar, at weddings, parties, etc. I am also in the process of recording another CD this month, with my Smooth Jazz Band at the River City Recording Studio, in Roseville, CA.

Guitar

My experience has been in performing solo classical guitar for over twenty years, including playing many other styles of music, such as, Latin American, Jazz, Rock, Blues, in various bands since the age of twelve. I have studied guitar, taken advanced music theory classes at Orange Coast College,in Newport Beach, CA, along with taking private lessons, and am continuing to play various types of music with local Sacramento groups, that I have recently started.

I write and continue to write different styles of music.. Two years ago,I recorded my first CD entitled “Harlequin”. This CD includes songs that I had composed as well as, cover songs and can be purchased on cdbaby.com, or at Jericho's Coffee Shop, in Roseville, or R5 Record Store, in Sacramento.. Last year I had the rare opportunity to be interviewed from various radio stations in the U.S. and Europe, and continue to sell my CD's.

My current musical activities and desires include, recording more CD's,(starting March 28, 2009), teaching, performing at private parties, restaurants, farmer's markets, charities, etc.

Phonics

Phonics is knowing that sounds and letters have a relationship. It is the link between what we say, read and write.Teachers then, need to specify the language of these precepts to the student, relating to how the sounds of letters convert into words,to meanings on the page, and finally to ideas conveyed by the writer.

Special attention is required by the teacher!!..They must work on subjects and topics that are interesting to the student, illustrating many examples of words and their sounds, and finally creating sentences, paragraphs and so on. I have used and still use, this understanding and methodology for tutoring my students K1 - K5 in the "No Child Left Behind" program, and it really works..In addition to using this methodology of instruction, after the student learns how to read, I use short stories and afterwords; post tests, as tools for them to enhance their memory of recall.

Smart parents know that only a child with an excellent foundation, and understanding of phonics, will allow them to climb the latter of literacy, that will enable them to become a successful and self reliant individual..!

I'm here, I'm patient, I'm interested and I'm ready to help!

Study Skills

In my early school days, my father, (who was one of the original Navy Blue Angels and a jet fighter pilot in charge of training other Navy pilots to land on and take off on aircraft carriers etc.),used to explain to me how important it is to be organized..He used to tell me "You can be whatever you want to be, as long as you are organized and focus on what you want to achieve"..He was right! Through his tutelage, (and although I had a slippery beginning, I managed to get organized, and as a result, I earned passing grades throughout all my years of schooling and became what I really wanted to be "A Musician"!

Once you have organization in your life, it is easy to understand that you will have time to do anything that you want, time to invest in other things that are important and necessary to you, and you will have an incredibly happy life! I guarantee you will! All it takes is a little discipline, and once you practice it and have it, you will never go back! I'd like to show you how!

Since I had learned organization skills in my early life, they have become a lifelong necessity that I use every day. As a result,I have had the opportunities of a life time and here are a few: I graduated from Chapman University with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, earned a certificate for Effective Speaking and Human Resources, from Dale Carnegie; became an accomplished guitarist, musician, composer, with one CD under my belt and more on the way; had a successful career in Managed Care, earned a pilot's license, have taught Bible study, music, surfing, reading, spelling etc., to students from K1 through K7 throughout my career, and finally; I have had my own business for two and a half years, a lifelong dream!
