About Tom

Hello, my name is Tom and I live and work in Southern California. I grew up in Northeast Ohio and attended college at Kent State University, where I studied visual communication design. I have a love and passion for art and I have found many ways to incorporate it into my life. I work at keeping my skills sharp which is a must in this industry. I am an active member in my local art community and I enjoy collaborating with other creative individuals with the same passion.

I teach a variety of classes, face-to-face and online, because I like sharing my knowledge and enjoy teaching young and old to be creative and productive. I think you learn the best when you are having fun, so I will try to make this experience as informative and fun as possible. I also take online courses, so yes, I do know what it is to be an online student.

Art and design is an exciting field. It's large and diverse and new trends are always happening in graphic design and the associated fields. All of these disciplines are such an important part of the design produced everyday. Add to that the Web and the Internet, and you are presented with endless opportunities for your professional career path.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe InDesign

Previously, I directed a graphic design studio specializing in corporate identity, publication design, and printing. My work as a designer has earned numerous national awards.

Desktop Publishing

I have been a "desktop publisher" since the first version of the PageMaker program. Since then, I have used QuarkXPress and currently Adobe InDesign. I've produced catalogs, schedules and published books. I am well-versed in all aspects of desktop publishing, magazine publishing and newspaper publishing.

Dreamweaver

My current projects in Adobe Dreamweaver deal with the newest responsive design applications. I utilize HTML 5, CSS three and JavaScript in my websites. The responsive design allows the pages to adapt to whatever device the viewer is using. This is the newest and most progressive type of web design.

Graphic Design

I am a graphic designer with over 30 years of experience. I currently work in a design studio as the lead graphic designer. I am also a college professor, teaching on ground and face-to-face classes in a variety of design disciplines and applications. I attended college at Kent State University, where I studied visual communication design.

Macintosh

I've been using the Macintosh OS since its inception in 1984. Obviously, I have seen quite a transformation from the early operating system to the current system, Yosemite. I am well-versed in all phases of the system as well as file management.

Video Production

My first encounter with "desktop" digital video was in 1992. I actually used the beta version of Adobe Premier. Since then, I have learned several different applications, including Final Cut Pro, iMovie and Adobe Premiere Pro.

Web Design

I currently teach in the web development and interactive media program for a nationally known art school. My experience includes basic page design, coding, as well as server-based applications.
