About Jackie

Hi! My name is Jackie, and I have 15+ years of experience in instructing students. All of my students, meaning a perfect 100%, have improved their grades by at least one letter grade, if not more, and passed every one of their tests and exams. I help all my clients reach their goals!

The feedback I often receive from all my students is that I make learning an enjoyable experience--they wanted to work harder to advance quickly in their lessons. All of my students agree that I have a lot of patience and turn even the most challenging lessons into ones of positivity and encouragement. I provide constructive feedback that helps the students reach conclusions on their own. It's just so enjoying being there to support and guide their experience!

With new students, I begin the first lesson with a rapid assessment of their level of understanding about the subject matter and what their goals are in working with me. With all my students, we work on their ultimate long-term goal and their short-term goals, as well as come up with an action plan to help them reach all their goals. I enjoy helping students see the bigger picture and being able to help them step-by-step with the details.

Right now I own a small business that specializes in tutoring and language studies. I have lived in Peru and Mexico where I learned Spanish through full immersion and taught English at an institute, which I managed. Throughout my career, my students have ranged from young children to adult professionals to retirees. Because of these vast age ranges, I have always utilized different teaching methods depending on each student’s needs. For instance, some students need to develop their working memory, so we practice honing that with certain exercises. Students learn differently from each other, with some students needing more visual learning and other students needing more kinesthetic approaches. Most of my students need to sharpen their critical thinking, an area that I push every one of my students to improve in. I myself have discovered a lot about the myriad of ways students learn, as well as how their experiences and even culture shape their perspectives about learning.

In high school, I took all AP and college prep classes. I went to a liberal arts college in Virginia where I focused on anthropology, sociology, and history. After college, I worked in communications and training for international health and development NGOs in Washington, DC. Later in grad school, I specialized in applied anthropology and public health, concentrating on health education among immigrant populations. While in grad school, I trained students in web design and web management. Before I lived in Latin America, I worked at St. Vincent de Paul Village (part of Father Joe's Villages) in downtown San Diego. There I taught health education topics to at-risk adults, children, and teens. Teaching such a wide variety of students pushed me to think creatively and come up with memorable ways to engage the students and help them remember the lessons. Not only have I taught at-risk populations, but I've worked with a lot of clients from all parts of the world, including Latin America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, South Asia, and East Asia. I have written several scholarly papers, including on health education among Latin American and Caribbean populations and language learning.

Like you, I'm still learning along the way, too. Currently, I'm teaching myself Brazilian Portuguese, small business accounting, and gardening. So, I completely empathize with my students about the challenges of being a student. I teach my classes the way I want to learn myself: practical, fun, creative, and interactive. It's such a sense of accomplishment when my students show off their terrific grades. I see the same look in my students' eyes regardless of age—that pride that shines from within, that exuberant smile, like they can conquer anything. I want my students to keep that pride for a long, long time.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I have a master's degree in Applied Anthropology, as well as a BA in Anthropology. I am well versed in both theories and methods of the four fields of anthropology: sociocultural, physical, archaeology, and linguistics.

College Counseling

I have helped several undergrad and grad students write their statement of purpose in order to apply to their universities of choice. I have also counseled students in how to contact their advisor of choice, how to introduce themselves, and how to get letters of recommendations from their advisors. All of this has helped each one of my students get into their top universities.

ESL/ESOL

I used to teach ESL full-time to Peruvian adults and high school students. The classes ranged from basic English where the students had little to no English experience to advanced business conversation among nearly fluent ESL speakers. Currently, I tutor students from different countries in ESL to help prepare for college classes, as well as the TOEFL.

General Computer

I have helped adults set up their laptops or desktop computers, learn how to use email and social media apps. I've also worked with adults in applying for jobs online, including submitting their resumes and cover letters.

Microsoft Publisher

I used Microsoft Publisher in the communications and training field. I grew to learn the ins and outs by using Publisher to create newsletters, training manuals, flyers, and more. I then trained staff on how to use Publisher, as well.

Social Studies

Social studies was the number one subject I excelled at in school. In high school, I took AP U.S. History and scored very well. I also took AP U.S. Government. In college, I minored in history and took several classes in a wide range of historical movements. I happened to major in anthropology, and part of my program was to also take sociology, historic preservation, archaeology, and classics classes.

Sociology

I have written several scholarly papers on sociology theories, as well as tutored many college students in sociology classes.

Spanish

Not only have I studied Spanish, but I have also lived in Peru and Mexico for a several years, as well as traveled extensively around Latin America, gaining fluency in a myriad of circumstances from business to medical to academic.

Writing

As a former Journalism student, writing has been the number one way I learned to communicate both academically and professionally. It's important to be able to distill highly technical information into language anyone can read, and not only can read, but enjoys reading. I had three mentors in the past who helped hone my writing skills, and I love applying what I learned from them with my own students today.
