About Jackie

Hi! My name is Jackie, and I have 15 years' experience in teaching and training. Currently, I am enjoying tutoring elementary and middle school children in reading, writing, and basic math, as well as teaching high school and college students how to research and write grade A papers. And I help adults from young professionals to retired seniors on a variety of subjects, from researching scientific and medical journal articles to learning how to use a smartphone and even the Internet!

All of my students, meaning a perfect 100%, have improved their grades by at least one letter grade, if not more, and passed every one of their tests and exams. I help ALL my clients reach their goals!

Recently I returned to the U.S. from living in Peru where I taught English-as-a-second-language and GMAT classes. My students ranged from adult business people to high school students. I really needed to utilize different teaching methods depending on the students' needs. Some students wanted more business-related conversation, so I had be able to teach business principles in marketing, communication, logistics, interviewing, and so much more. Other students needed to work on the basics of grammar, reading, and writing, and we had a lot of fun in class, whether going through the lesson or improvising by singing the latest American pop songs to learn the lyrics.

The feedback I often received from my Peruvian students was that I made learning an enjoyable experience--they wanted to work harder to advance quickly in their classes. Both my Peruvian and American students agree that I have a lot of patience and turn even the most challenging lessons into ones of positivity and encouragement. I provide critical feedback in the most constructive of ways that helps the students reach conclusions on their own. I enjoy being there to support and guide their experience!

Before I left for Peru, I worked at St Vincent de Paul Village (part of Father Joe's Villages) in downtown San Diego. There I taught adults with and without learning disabilities, as well as children from preschoolers to high school students. Teaching such a wide variety of students pushed me to think creatively and come up with memorable ways to engage the students and help them remember the lessons.

In high school, I took all AP and college prep classes. I went to a liberal arts college in Virginia where I focused on social studies and biology. I spent a few years training business people in Microsoft Office, Photoshop, InDesign, as well as presentation techniques. In grad school, I specialized in applied anthropology and public health. During that time, I tutored students in web design. In between, I've worked in Communications and Training in international health and development, so I have a lot of experience to bring to teaching.

Basically, I love teaching. I'm enthusiastic yet patient, and I absolutely adore helping kids and adults alike learn. It's such a sense of accomplishment when my students show off their terrific grades. I see the same look in my students eyes regardless of age--that pride that shines from within, that exuberant smile, like they can conquer anything. I want my students to keep that pride for a long, long time.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe InDesign

I've been using Adobe InDesign since it was called Adobe PageMaker. My experience started in high school nearly 20 years ago when I used PageMaker to write and layout articles for the school newspaper. Later I used this program (then called InDesign) for several years in my work after college in communications and marketing. It's a fun program to learn and use, and I look forward to teaching all the ins and outs!

Anthropology

I have a master's degree in Applied Anthropology, as well as a BA in Anthropology. I am well versed in both theories and methods of the four fields of anthropology: sociocultural, physical, archaeology, and linguistics.

Desktop Publishing

As a former Marketing and Communications professional, I spent several years working in desktop publishing, creating materials like newsletters, flyers, invitations, and so much more. I'd be happy to share my tips of the trade in developing creative materials in the most time-efficient and cost-effective ways!

ESL/ESOL

I used to teach ESL full-time to Peruvian adults and high school students. The classes ranged from basic English where the students had little to no English experience to advanced business conversation among nearly fluent ESL speakers. Currently, I tutor students from different countries in ESL to help prepare for college classes, as well as the TOEFL.

Microsoft Publisher

I used Microsoft Publisher in the communications and training field. I grew to learn the ins and outs by using Publisher to create newsletters, training manuals, flyers, and more. I then trained staff on how to use Publisher, as well.

Nutrition

As a health educator, I've provided nutrition education to patients at community clinics for several years.

Social Studies

Social studies was the number one subject I excelled at in school. In high school, I took AP U.S. History and scored very well. I also took AP U.S. Government. In college, I minored in history and took several classes in a wide range of historical movements. I happened to major in anthropology, and part of my program was to also take sociology, historic preservation, archaeology, and classics classes.

Writing

As a former Journalism student, writing has been the number one way I learned to communicate both academically and professionally. It's important to be able to distill highly technical information into language anyone can read, and not only can read, but enjoys reading. I had three mentors in the past who helped hone my writing skills, and I love applying what I learned from them with my own students today.
