About Melissa

With the Common Core Standards, does your child have the skills to communicate and validate his answers in many different ways? Students DO learn in multiple ways. It is my job to help your child grasp concepts he may not "get" in the classroom.

I have extensive elementary school teaching experience since 1998 (1st-6th). I hold a master's in educational technology from SDSU, a master's in reading education from National University, and a BA in English and communications from Holy Names University. My previous work with children includes teaching special education classes, GED with Job Corps youth, and YMCA day camps. Currently, I teach 6th grade at a technology-based elementary school.

My goals for your child:

--Work to merge my strategies and experience with your child's learning intelligence.

--Determine what obstacles hinder his/her learning.

--Work for reasonable goals to improve grades, while building up his self-confidence!

Does your child use any of these language or math curricula: Wonders!, Benchmark Universe, Achieve3000, GoMath, or Eureka? If so, I can help.

No child wants to feel abandoned in the classroom. Sadly, this often happens. Let's change that!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

The elementary school district I currently teach at has implemented curriculum around Common Core for the last three years. I addition, I have created content materials based upon the CCSS standards for 6th grade, as well as NGSS standards for science. I have administered the statewide testing SBAC which emphasizes writing and modeled evidence for derived answers. Some resources our school have adopted include New York's Eureka Math and Expeditionary Learning materials for language arts.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am Multiple Subject CLAD certified (State of CA) since 1998. My background Masters degrees include Reading Comprehension and Educational Technology. My work in the classroom has ranged from teaching primary (1st & 2nd) reading, writing and math standards. Most of my experience has been working with upper grade students (4th-6th). I take pride in improving their writing & communication skills, as well as reading comprehension and test taking strategies.

Elementary Math

I have taught elementary school math for over 15 years. I currently teach 6th grade and am familiar with the rigor of Common Core. I like to use real-world applications when teaching math to make the concepts more accessible to students. It's important that students have foundational strategies for problem solving rather than only relying upon algorithmic practice alone. I also incorporate discussion and writing of math so that the student can communicate his/her thinking.

Macintosh

I have worked with the Macintosh platform for over 15 years. I am very familiar with its OS and core applications, including the iLife suite, and Word for Mac. I have used iLife applications in the classroom for students to produce podcasts (GarageBand), and school news features (iMovie, iDVD), and collaboration (iChat). I regularly use my Mac for personal use (iPhoto, Mail, iCal), and am strongly aware of advanced features to customize & optimize performance. Additionally, I have extra personal resources, considering my husband is a graphic designer and only uses Macs.

Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Outlook is the only source of email used in my workplace. I am familiar with its email features, including how to create folder and sort contacts. I use the calendar feature to create or reply to invites and reminders. Using the advanced features, I have customized my settings for me to receive text message calendar alerts from specific contacts to my cell phone.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have several years of experience using PowerPoint for Mac, and basics with the Windows interface. I have used PowerPoint regularly as an elementary teacher to make presentations to students, or have taught students how to use it for classroom assignments. I also have extensive knowledge of similar multimedia presentations tools such as Google Slides, Apple's Keynote, Prezi, and various web-based applications.

Phonics

Having taught both 1st grade and Special Day classes, I have experience in various phonic programs. In addition, I personally use recent online programs to supplement phonics learning with my own Kinder son. Success has come from using combinations of different strategies to reach the learner - visual, audio, tactile - By identifying letters and associating them with sound, picture cards, music, motions and realia (physical representation of a letter-sound), as well as constant repetition, students can have the best retention.

Public Speaking

Previous to becoming a teacher, I minored in Communications at Holy Names University, and took courses in TV & Radio Broadcasting at Palomar College. I have experience in public speaking, including presenting (both in person, and online) to various crowds of educators, at least twice a year, on the topic of educational technology in the classroom. When needed, I have also volunteered to speak often at civic and religious organizations including Rotary and Lion Club to represent my workplace.

Social Studies

Social studies experience has been primarily elementary K-6 subjects. These include for primary grades: understanding community helpers and their roles (1st, 2nd grades), and city origins (3rd). For upper grades: state and country origins (4th grade- CA history, 5th-American history), branches of government & their models, and ancient civilizations (6th-Egypt, Mesopotamia, China, India). In all these classes, I have often instructed students to produce a related project based upon the subject, and integrating writing, arts, crafts or computer technology.

Study Skills

Currently teaching 6th grade, modeling study & organizational skills is imperative for these students to master in order to move onto middle school. Besides stressing basic organization of a school binder, I have taught test-taking skills using various test prep guides, and reviewing test release questions for the state's CST. I frequently use graphic organizers and charts to outline thoughts for writing, research and reading comprehension. Prior to elementary school, I also guided high school age students towards organizing and writing resumes, and GED prep.
